CV's - Do HR departments look at them all - I'll tell you for why.......

I applied to VHI a couple of months ago for a Customer Service role. I have lots of experience but I was not shortlisted, and heard nothing except the auto reply email.

2 weeks ago I applied for a Sales Advisor role, and even stated on the application that I had no sales experience, and yesterday they called and I have an interview!

This makes me wonder - do these companies get so inundated with CV's that they just skim some off the top - do you think it is pot luck?

Sales jobs generally don't require that much experience in sales oddly enough, but value Customer Service skills more... I know in my old job (Carphone Warehouse) they loved customer service skills and really put a push on getting people in to stores with those specific qualities, as it's easy train someone up on a product, but having good customer skills takes longer.

And do research on the company, whoever it is... Interviewers love someone who's made an effort!

It's pretty much expected that you know a bit about the company. I've always been asked a question or two from the hr person about the company. Nothing out of the ordinary the stuff you would find on their website/profile.

I applied to a software MNC in 2011, 2 weeks no reply (which I considered odd as I was very qualified for this particular role), email hr "ya, we got your cv thanks", not even a PFO. I wasn't too bothered, lots of jobs in software thankfully.

Two years later, back on the job market, same role pops up, send in CV, get a call next day, interview scheduled for two days later, HR told me that the hiring managers are very interested in my CV.
