FTTC seems to be coming along nicely so I'm happy with Eircom for now.

2Gbps is way too much for home use IMO. You would need more than a gigabit switch / NIC to make use of it!

I'm not talking about casual home use..

More business / working from home etc.

Its about how far behind despite the jobs crisis etc.

    I'd be happy with 1mb.

UPC do 150Mb for €52/Month. That's better than most of the US, Canada, Australia, NZ etc.

    I'd be happy with 1mb.

You should enable the dual channel on that isdn line, you'll get tons more speed :p

I've tried everything available where I am (excluding Satellite) and they're all like that.:(

The only time I've capped 15Mbps is torrenting or downloading a game on Steam, and for the most part I don't do either activity frequently enough to seek out a more expensive internet plan.

That's only if you're lucky to live where it's available and there are not many places where it is. 2MB is the best I can ever hope for. And, with only 2MB it can get desperate if we are all trying to use the internet at the same time in my house.

AT least we are better than the usa, where many areas have 2 broadband providers , a cable tv company or a phone company.
WE can look at country,s like south korea, wheres there,s good infrastructure ,and very fast broadband.
HOW did they do it, its not rocket science.
Someone has to build ,ducts, pipes, put down fibre.

ALL new buildings, should have cables, ducting put down,
so theres acess for at least 2 companys to connect broadband.
    And there,s plenty of competition.
When theres a new building getting planning permission,
did the councils , look at putting down pipes for fibre, broadband acess.
With easy acess for different competing bb providers?
WE don,t need to reinvent the wheel.
WE could copy other countrys systems.
But i think for most people,
    10meg,per second is fast enough,
eg most people, use facebook, youtube maybe netflix,

I presume south korea built broadband like roads, street lighting
eg its part of the planning system,
run pipes ,cables in all urban areas, with room for fibre optic cables,
Presume 90 per cent of people will use broadband,
make it part of the planning process.

I presume you mean 2meg per second, uncle sam ie.

in Some places in england community grounps have organised,
and dug trenches ,and put down telecom cables,
to get a fast connection to that area.
IT would not be cost effecient to provide a 200meg connection ,in every
street ,thats more than most people need.

IF i was running a business that,s based on fast net acess ,i would not buy a house
    in a remote rural location.

ONCE you have 10 meg per second, speed the most important thing is the download cap.

I presume irish startups go where there,s fast net connections avaidable.

I know some one who uses a usb modem, 10 euro a month,
she gets around 1meg per second speed, on 02.

For tech startups it's definitely a consideration, but most areas now have semi-reasonable broadband, or reasonable access to servers that have fast connections (like amazon AWS, or any data centre servers really).

Certainly I'd be perfectly happy doing a tech startup from home once the FTTC becomes available with it's upload speeds in the 10Mbps and up region.
