Very sad, but judging by the horrific damage inflicted in this case I can't see any brand new five star rated car stand up to impact pressures much better TBH.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Lesson learned: If you break down on a motorway/dual carraigeway, get out of the car and get off the road. This has happened many times and it's a very dangerous situation.

They do say if you break down to exit the vehicle and stand up on the bank/away from the road.

    Very sad altogether.

    Very sad.

Pics like this should be shown to all the stupid Irish drivers who park on the hard shoulder for no good reason (i.e. to make phone calls, eat, read the paper(!), etc)

More importantly, those who drive on the hard shoulder. I saw a comment on AH recently by someone who thought the hard shoulder was for overtaking.

There wasn't even a full hard shoulder there - very unfortunate.

That tipper lorry stopped 175m past the wreckage of the car. The speed limit for that lorry is 50mph on the A2 dual carriageway. The typical stopping distance for a lorry from 50mph is 66m. There is a clear line of sight of about 150m before the position of the car wreckage --- that's about five or six seconds of clear sight of the stopped car. That lorry driver has a lot to explain.

It's a 4 axle truck whichhas a max weight of 32 ton, it's stopping distance including reaction time is more like 120m or more, probably more from shock and seeing that the accident has already happened the driver probably didn't hit the brakes at max strength.

Driver was probably also driving behind another truck thus limiting their visibility to less than 50m or 2-3 secs. It's unfortunate, and yes the truck drivers fault but I doubt it's a clear cut as you make out.

As a number of posters have said you should get out of any vehicle and wait well off the hard shoulder, something that is drilled into drivers during compulsory training on the continent but totally ignored here. I've seen cars having broken down and been left on the hard shoulder for days or weeks and nobody moved them, not the council, NRA, Gardai. Nobody.

UK statistic: 20% of people killed on motorways are stopped on the hard shoulder at the time…

Almost everyday this week I have heard people who are ringing in to radio programs saying that they were stopped at the side of the M50, M4 or whatever, many had kids in the car, I shudder every time.

Exactly. I see this regularly on the M11 and M7 too. Drivers who do this have little idea of the danger they are creating for themselves - and others - by doing so.

feel sorry for the drivers family.i said to the wife when i read this on the text on tv that the truck probably drove over the car and it don't look like i was wrong.the a2 is a very good road to drive on if your paying attention but as said it don't have much of a hard shoulder in places.

And when they have finished they start off and pull out into the fast flowing traffic in first or second gear. Its madness!
