The Gardai now dump impounded cars into a privately operated facility and your friend may have to pay them to get the car released.

On the southside of Dublin it used to be a place down the N11 in Kilmacanogue, possibly still the case.

My car was the subject of a crime (number plates swapped and mine used in a robbery) and was taken away for forensic examination. I was a completely innocent party, the car was voluntarily surrendered by me from the driveway of my house to the local gendarmarie.

Two days later when I heard nothing from the cops, I rang the place in Kilmacanogue, they said that the cops had done the forensics and I could retrieve the car but if I didn't do so by close of business that very day, they would start charging me some outrageous daily charge.

Good luck to your friend getting his car back with nothing to pay!
