Hi i came across these 2 shots on the net which where taken at a event. To me they look HDR edited but i find t hard to believe he would do every photo like this as it would take ages?

I really like the look the way the background is blacked out and theres loads of ambient light coming in and causing ramdom strikes and dots. So does anyone know what settings where used or what tricks were used in post? Grat pics all the same.

    Cheers

thats not HDR its slow sych shutter or possibly rear curtain flash...or both.

with some post processing pre-sets !

at a guess 1/30sec or 1/45sec shutter priority, ISO 200 and flash set on ETTL (Canon) ....its just a complete guess.

To be honest ...its not the best of club photography ...but the images are sharp (ish) and show there is some degree of atmosphere in a club.....could be done better, but then again - every photographer will say they could do that...or do better.

Yes i was thinking as slow as 1/3 rear curtain but with the strikes coming across im wondering how he caught them, in every pic he has them but there seems to be no source unless it was really slow like 1 sec and pressed at the source and dragged across to subject?????

What sort of editing for that look was used do you know?

The processing looks like a split-tone with 'clarity' (Lightroom) bumped up. Could the lighting streaks be separate exposures overlaid?

maybe its not the camera moving but the lights !!

You know what you could be right ill have a look and see if theres any resemblance with the lights in all the other pics, i just find his photos very interesting and different from others so was really interested to know what technique was used?

But theres so many people frozen right back in the photo so i dont know why they wouldn't be blurry and only the lights?

That's what made me think it was an overlay, I can't see movement anywhere else...

definately looks like a seperate layer added .... colours are simply just wrong !! (bad processing in my opinion)

Ye was annoying me wondering how he got these shots, to be honest i like them and i think its different from all the other nightclub stuff!

No for my second question ......were could you get good overlays? I know i could google some but does anyone know any good sites that have these effects etc? Something like cgtextures.com.

My brother shot a heap of this style at my wedding and got similar results with no extra layers or post processing. 16-35mm lens, f8, 0.8 of a sec shutter, ISO 100 and flash.

No idea on the rear curtain doesn't say in the exif. Some of the more "dreamy" shots are f5.6, camera was a Nikon D4.

He intensionally drew the love hearts in the 3rd shot by moving the camera.

I don't think the effect does the photos any favours (They're far from good to begin with) but if I had to guess, i'd say a double exposure.

One longish (3-5secs?) exposure of those lights (whose source probably aren't in the frame) and flash/short exposure for the actual shot of the club.

So he must be moving the camera quickly before the shutter closes as in the second pic there's a huge movement from the light hanging on the roof and that light deffo didnt move ha!

Yup, though the place was rocking so the light might have been moving :P :D

Cheers for sharing because originally i had thought it was a very long shutter speed like 1sec f11 rear curtain that the other guys used so id say its pretty much the same technique. Cheers everyone or the help and info.
