    Hello there.

    I build a pc , using this build, http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056917785

I thought I had better move the thread before it went totally off topic.

Put it together over a few nights, took my time with it.

Got it all together, switched it on, no explosions so thats good. The fans start up, the HDD sounds like its spinning up and the CD drive spins away. The GPU fans start up on power up too.

Have tried a few fixes based on reading from the net.

Have removed the Ram, have checked that the monitor works,

Have put the Ram into different slots, tried it with just one stick, then the other stick.

I cant see anyway to plug the monitor into the mobo if i removed the GPU.

The only snag i can think of from the assembly was the thermal paste on the cpu and the cooler.
I think i put on too much, big pea rather than a small pea amount applied.
Some ran off the top of the cup and onto the side and the mobo.
Not sure if that would stop it working or if its just an mess i need to remove later. CPU went in smoothly, no force needed to get it to fit.

Here are some pics, would love some advice before I end up going to a shop to try and get it fixed.
The cable management is a bit pants but i can sort that after i get it working.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Do you have the 8-pin connected to the top left of the board?

Do you have the 8-pin connected to the top left of the board?

Im looking at that at the moment alright.
There are two blue cables "left over" from the psu, one says U1 the other says CP.

Would these be the connectors and is there any order they should go in?

I thought the 25 pin power cable fed the mobo.

Though im a newb in this area.

You put those two connections together to make one 8 pin connection.
You plug it into the 8 pin cpu power connection on the motherboard. Check the manual if you can't find it.

Thanks Tuxy and Terror, I feel like a right Div now.

Now to get my pc to access the net, have the network cable in but it says it cant find the driver to connect :)

    Something simple most like

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,983 ✭✭✭✭tuxy

No problem, that's what we are here for.
You need to install the network driver from the motherboard cd. Once that's done if you need any other drivers download them from the net to get the latest version.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,614 ✭✭✭Redfox25

Simple like install the drivers ...

Is my bios or some other setting not up to date enough I wonder?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,299 ✭✭✭✭BloodBath

Have you installed all of your motherboard drivers? Are your graphics drivers up to date? Downloaded on line, not using the one's on the disk.

    Did you update windows?

    Think so

Tried the windows update tool, get Windows Update error 800B0100

It recommended downloading a patch, did so and then tried again. No joy.

    :)

    Still getting regular crashes?

    When is it crashing?

Did you go to the mainboard website to download the latest board drivers? Same for the graphics card.

It's possible that the mainboard needs a bios update as well but I wouldn't do it from within windows if it's crashing. You would need to put it on a usb stick and install it from the bios.

    Hey

I downloaded a Windows fix tool which seems to have cleared the error stopping me from downloading Windows updates.

    It crashed once since.
It seems to happen when im downloading information from an external HD.
Graphics card drivers are up to date, working on the Mobo ones now.

I think your right on the bios update, i read something about that earlier.
Sleep soon then back to it in the morning.
    Thanks for the help.

Was just playing WOW, it took ages to load the characters and once I tried to upload the new graphics settings it crashed.

So I logged back in to confirm that that was crashing it and bang, gone again.
Not sure if thats pointing to a GPU driver or the bios.

i downloaded the AMD vision engine control centre earlier so that should all be up to date.
Its something small but niggly .

Download hwmonitor and record your temps in games. See if the gpu or cpu are overheating.

It's unlikely but there's no harm in crossing it off the list.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,614 ✭✭✭Redfox25

    Downloaded HWM

Temps are 30 for mobo and 32 for GPU.

Getting one reading of 60 C for AUXTIN

Not sure what that is but 60 sounds somewhat high?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,614 ✭✭✭Redfox25

The 12v power cable is fairly stretched over the the GPU to the socket, will order the extension like Tuxy suggested and see if that fixes the problem.

Have reinstalled Windows 7, gone through every item in the device manager and checked for updates and used the windows 7 update tool.
Hmw says everything is pretty cool.

The last thing on the list would be the bios , im pretty sure the driver is up to date for the mobo. I found the Asrock site a bit confusing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,299 ✭✭✭✭BloodBath

What about the cpu? Are you recording these temps while gaming or benchmarking. Try Prime95 to stress the cpu and check your temps.

A Stop 4E error is a "PFN List Corrupt" error. Almost any time I've seen this it has been bad RAM. Might also be a timing issue on the RAM too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,299 ✭✭✭✭BloodBath

Make sure your ram settings in the BIOS match the rated settings on the ram.

Download memtest and test each stick of ram.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,614 ✭✭✭Redfox25

Cheers for the suggestions lads. Will check tonight when i
    i get home.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,614 ✭✭✭Redfox25

K, I downloaded Memtest and ran it with both sticks of RAM in place.
( I had to open 2 windows to do this, as advised by Memtest)

    Straight away computer locked.

So, removed stick 2, ran test on 1, left it for 30 mins was fine.
Loaded stick 2 and removed 1 and ran test.
Within a minute it had found multiple errors.
"Does not store values accurately" is the gist of the error message.

Looks like I will be contacted the supplier to arrange a return.
    Hope that fixes the problem.
Anyone had any experience with returns with them?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,299 ✭✭✭✭BloodBath

I think you are the second person to get faulty ram recently. Possibly the same RAM too. It could have been a faulty batch. Still should have been picked up in testing.

E-mail them explaining the problem, they will probably ask you to return both sticks though. (which means pc down time :( )

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,614 ✭✭✭Redfox25

Cheers blood. Have mailed them and await a reply.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,614 ✭✭✭Redfox25

new ram finally arrives. Put it in and and now my machine is alternating between crashing and locking up. Hope its not dodgy ram again:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,299 ✭✭✭✭BloodBath

I doubt it. Highly unlikely you got 2 sets of bad ram. It has to be something else.

Maybe your os is corrupt from the dodgy ram?

Did you run memtest on the new ram?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,614 ✭✭✭Redfox25

I set up memtest and went out for a while.

When I came back the system had crashed again :)

I put it running again with both sticks fo ram inside and within a minute I had multiple errors, the same type as before. "Does not store values accurately" is the gist of the error message.

Unless they sent me back the same ram again or some more from the same batch this is fairly unluck if its the ram again?.

Im going to pop out one of the sticks at a time and run memtest again and see what happens.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 940 ✭✭✭GHOST MGG

you need to check your memory timings..make sure the timings are the same in bios as the memory installed..
i had this problem once before myself on a old core 2 duo and a gigabyte board..i eventually relaxed the memory timings through the bios
a small bit and never got the errors through memtest again.

Right, ran memtest with one of the sticks in at a time.

First one, pc froze after it hit 3%

Second stick, ran for about 20 mins, no errors before the system restarted.

I have reinstalled Windows and updated it and all that.
here is hoping that Im getting closer to fixing it.
Ghost , I checked the Bios earlier, the timings were correct.
Will double check them in a few minutes just to be sure.
When you say relax the settings what do you mean?
    Go from 9-9-9-24 to 10-10-10-24 ?

Are you running the stand along bootable memtest86 to rule out any software problems with windows or other applications?

looking back on your original post redfox was it the [ RipjawsX ] F3-17000CL9D-8GBXM ram you got with your ASRock B75 Pro3, Sockel 1155, ATX motherboard? maybe clutching at straws here but according to the memory makers its not compatible with that board.link to the gskill website with compatible boards..maybe changed with a bios update but i couldnt find any more info on the site. http://gskill.com/products.php?index=403

If that's the RAM the OP has then it's 1.65V RAM. In this case it might be necessary to lower the clock speed in the BIOS (maybe to 1066 or 1333) or up the voltage to 1.65. However I couldn't recommend upping the voltage because 1.65 can be unsafe for LGA1155 processors, it's barely safe for a 1366. There's a risk of damaging the memory controller in the processor.

    8GB-Kit G.Skill RipJaws-X PC3-12800U CL9 1.5volt DDR3 1600 is what it says on the Ram.

Timings are bang on in the Bios.

Memtest86, no I havent tried it yet, im installing it now to see if it kicks up any clues.

You don't install it you boot it from either usb or cd/dvd
There are power saving another things in windows that can possibly cause problems with memory tests. It may be why you got a reset after 20 mins on one stick.
Booting to a stand alone memory test eliminates these possible problems.

I installed memtest 86 on a usb and ran it with each stick in its own and then together. All passes.
am i looking at a software problem so?

am i looking at a software or driver issue so?

id say possibly so..you said earlier your windows had a problem updating?
maybe a clean install of windows to once and for all rule out a software or operating system error.

I resintalled windows 7 last night using the upgrade funciton.

Got a bit browned off with my pc not working after trying all the suggestions above, so brought it into a local computer place for them to have a look at it.

Their suggestion was that the PSU was struggling to power everything so they suggested they fit a bigger one and see if that fixed it.

They eventually fitted one, which worked for a while before dying. They took the machine apart to see if there was a short in the case but no joy there.

Their parting advice was to return the mobo and get a new one as it was most likey the problem.

Could the mobo be causing lockups and power offs and blow a psu?
The orginal psu is back in the machine and still working.
Should I just strip the machine and return the board in hopes that a new one will fix the problem or is there anything I can try to find the problem?

    Cheers

How much did they charge you for the pleasure of putting a worse power supply in for it to blow and possibly take parts with it? The majority of people who work in these shops are clueless to be honest.

It's hard to say without knowing what you have and haven't done. Maybe someone lives close to you so they could have a look at it. It could be the board. It could be something as simple as a driver or bios problem.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,614 ✭✭✭Redfox25

In fairness to them, they didnt charge me anything.

It is hard to know alright when your chatting to people, they did seem capable enough.

    Based in Maynooth.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,614 ✭✭✭Redfox25

Switch the pc on, everything seems to be working so hopefully nothing was damaged.

All my cable ties are still in place so I assume that they had the new psu on the bench rather than installed in the machine.
