Help - bad pain on top of foot only while running

    hi folks,
    i've been struggling with really bad pain on the top of my foot for the last 3 weeks. was up to 17 miles in preperation for the Derry Walled Marathon on the June bank holiday weekend. I stupidly wore newish runners (kayanos) with tri laces on my last 17 mile run - at the end of it, it felt like someone had jumped on the top of my foot.
    i had more or less stopped running as a result, i went for an mri scan but no stress fracture or tendonitis has shown up on the scan. I tried going for a light run yesterday - the pain wasn't too bad for the first few k but gradually got worse after that.
    I tried to go for another run today but had to stop after 1k because the pain is as bad as ever.
    Just wondering has anyone experienced top of foot pain only when running which wasn't a stress fracture and/or tendonitis? if so, was there anything specific you did to alleviate the pain ? do I need to just rest for a few weeks and forget about running a marathon in 6 weeks time? help

    I don't know what tri laces are but I did have pain on the top of my foot due to laces before and resolved it by following the method outlined here

    The obvious thing to point out that it came on when you got new shoes. Were the new ones different from the old ones? Perhaps you need to get a pair like your old ones.

    What did your doc tell you to do? They're the best ones for that kind of advice, not people on the internet.

    that's the thing ... the doctor just said i could go back running, there was no stress fracture and no tendon damage, just take anti-inflamatories if necessary. Naturally I was delighted to hear this and tried it out after taking a nurofen plus just in case .... that's when my bubble got burst

    They're elasticated laces .... thanks i'm going to give that lacing method a try

    the shoes are the same as my previous ones - just a newer version

    Your feet swell during a run so make sure you don't tie your laces too tightly.

    cheers yea - i've been experimenting with lacing methods too ... i also went for physio and dry needling for it as well - don't think there is any magic cure apart from rest :(

    I don't normally do this (pimp blog), but I wrote a piece on the shop blog a few weeks ago about triathletes and the dangers of elasticated laces.

    They are too tight on your foot and not suitable for long distance running, that is the most likely source of your foot pain (as pointed out). If you want to insist on training with quick release laces you should go for the Greeper style which is a standard non-stretch lace with a coupling.

    I've started using the elastic laces on my regular shoes and the ones I'll be using in London on Sunday as I have found I then don't do the laces up too tight. I have them set nicely and never need to mess with them again.

    Do tri people tend to do them up tight then?

    Depends on the lace.

    The Xtenex laces are a nice elastic that can be set and never adjusted. The regular yankz / lock laces etc are usually tugged and a slider locks the foot in place. These can be too tight over longer runs and sleepy feet, pinced tendons etc on top of the foot can be uncomfortable.

    If your a one pair person then the Greepers are the best I've come across, put em in and forget them, great for kids too. If you have specific racers then elastics are fine and use a laced pair for the training runs.
