407 may be dead - what next for €5,000

    Hi all
It looks like my Peugeot 407 may have just dies a death today. Sailed through the NCT in Feb but in the last few days it has been giving a bit of bother - started to lose power a bit but no engine lights on. I was waiting for my mechanic to be able to fit it in for a look at it.
Today, I was driving along and the oil light came on and the display screamed at me to STOP!! As I was only about 2km from home I figured I might just get there, however.....about 500m later as I indicated for car behind to pass me out the engine just died - guy on tow truck reckons engine may be siezed
I'm sick of all the hassle I have had with the car but changing it was just not in budget for this year (still isn't really) but I can probably scrape together about 5k to replace it now.

Looking for recommendations within budget and the criteria is:
    Budget €5,000
    Mileage approx 600-700km week
Not too bothered about tax rate
Bit of Comfort & reasonable economy
Will consider saloon hatchback or estate
    Reliability a must

Thanks in advance for any suggestions:)

I am considering getting it fixed but have been told it could run to about €1500 if it needs engine replaced so just checking out my options. Personally don't think it's worth spending that much on it - car is 2005 407 hdi - roughly 270,000km on the clock

yes, that's pretty high mileage , but hdi engines are very reliable, would go double more mileage if oil changes not skipped and ... most important - right oil used. IF you go to unknown garages, they will put cheapest oil in the world. oil chnage has to be done with garage/person , who gets right oil and you know he put right oil, or get oil yourself, and ask somebody to change it.

Thanks for the Bangernomics suggestion, I will check it out. Unfortunately I know nothing about cars so I'm a little afraid of going down this route...... I do however have someone to check one out for me if I find one.

Also forgot to mention I am based in Galway so my preferred area for search would be West of the Shannon:)

I have had the car serviced regularly and actually asked about the oil recently and was assured that they are using good quality

I have had a long list of woes with this particular car......my uncle used to always say I definitely got a Monday morning yoke!!

Sorry to hear of your misfortune..:(
The service intervals on the 1.6 hdi's should be 15k kms or less not the 20k kms thats was originally recommended for them.

I would suggest change oil every 10 k km, well , at least i am doing this, and never had any oil related problems.

u should consider a 530diesel bmw comfortable and reliable and generally econmic enough for a 3litre.
my 330 averages about 40mpg with a mix of town and country driving

Any examples out there for me to have a look at.....still waiting on diagnosis for mine but have a feeling it's not looking too good. I was ideally hoping to knock another year or 2 out of it and trade up instead of having to do it now and move sideways!!

bit out of budget but defo worth a look in my eyes if its a genuine car also look at the older e39s. with regular servicing this cars will clock up big miles. tax is a killer thou

Thanks guys, I like the look of both of those - tax on the bmw is a bit high and volvo is a little far away...... then again some people are never satisfied:-)
What would the mpg be like on them?

    This one looks clean too

Seat is good car, reliable, vw all through out, but i think it is a bit too small for family, ok if you driving alone or with passenger.

If you up to vw, then have a look on passat - http://cars.donedeal.ie/find/cars/for-sale/Ireland/?filter%28make%29=Volkswagen&filter%28max_engine%29=Max+Litres&filter%28max_mileage%29=Max+KM&filter%28max_price%29=5500&filter%28max_year%29=2008&filter%28min_engine%29=Min+Litres&filter%28min_mileage%29=Min+KM&filter%28min_price%29=4500&filter%28min_year%29=2004&filter%28model%29=Passat&multiFilter%28fuelType%29=Diesel&source=all

i did selection of passats nearly to your needs, and if you see price over 5 k, remember, you always will be able haggle price down. ;)

I brought a C5 diesel last year a 2007 model, top of the range, leather, cruise control etc. Drove to Essex (835kms) last year on 3/4 tank. Very comfortable car. Same engine as your 407 but spec wise possibly better. Paid 4,500 last year.

The focus 1.6tdci's are a popular and reasonable choice too.

If the red oil light came on you really should have stopped driving - this means the oil pressure is dangerously low, which can cause serious damage in a modern turbodiesel.

Problems with oil sludge/carbon build up leading to oil starvation seems to be a common issue with these 1.6 HDi engines - as said above, not using the correct grade oil can make the problem a lot worse.

Please note the Ford 1.6 TDCI is pretty much the same engine with the same problems. However, the 2.0 HDi is a completely different design and seems to be generally more reliable, if you're willing to put up with the tax!

Do you like how the 407 drives? I don't think you'd find the levels of handling and comfort in something like a Passat - I have a 406 myself and find it very comfortable on long trips, and the soft suspension is well suited to Irish roads :) I find VW/Seat/Skoda seem to have very hard seats in comparison, and the ride is nowhere near as smooth. They're not exactly the pinnacle of reliability they used to be either.

For comfort and reliability, the best car I have ever owned was one of these

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/4819472

4 yrs and 120k miles with no major issues, great car for munching miles.

Ignore the 60mpg its bollox, but it will do 50 if driven normally.

If you are looking for trouble free motoring cheap maintaince a car thats good to drive safe and economical go for a 1.6 ford focus. you can't possibly go wrong with the second most popular car in the world you can have one in any body style and for 5000 you should get yourself one with some nice extras such as cruise control

60 MPG is probably achievable, but unless you like driving 80-90 km/h on motorways then 50 MPG is a lot more realistic. The best I got was 58 MPG in my 406 HDi 90 but it was a tedious experience...

Thanks for that guys - I think the Citroen is out for me tho even though I have driven one and found it really comfortable and nice car all round. Do they not have same engine as my Peugeot? Have been soured by my overall experience with this car - even though I love the car to drive, I haven't had any extended period of motoring with it without some serious fault arising, truth be told I probably should have gotten rid a long time ago.....or at least in Feb when everything was going ok and I had full 2 year NCT on it.

I'm not overly put off by high(ish) tax on the right car. I do minimum 600km/week and can do up to 1000 so I spend quite a bit of time in the car (don't get paid mileage). I know there is a strong argument for a new car - I just don't have the possibility of financing it at the moment - thats why budget is set at €5k for now. Was planning on looking into it next year when I have a current Credit Union loan cleared. Hoping to pick something up now that I will be able to run for a couple of years and look at changing then.

The 1.6 HDi (PSA DV6/Ford DLD) like yours was available in the facelift C5 from 2004 onwards. However, both the 407 and C5 are also available with the 2.0 HDi (DW10) like what pred racer suggested and what I have in my 406 - the 2.0 HDi is a completely unrelated engine and does not have oil sludge/starvation issues like the 1.6.

The 406 2.0 HDi was popular with taxi drivers in the UK, and was also found in the Peugeot Partner/Citroen Berlingo and other PSA vans - many have done over 300k miles without much hassle.

As above the 2.0hdi is bullet proof.
At your budget I personally wouldnt be looking anywhere else than a 406 or a c5 with this engine (with a nice bit of change left over;) )
