    Hi all,

Thinking of playing one of these with my Dad and will be staying overnight so a decent pub is required. Which would you play?

    Loire.

Lahinch is a world class golf course. There are very few front nines in golf that can compare with the variety on offer here and the back nine is no slouch. Village / town is good fun too.

Tralee is an excellent golf course and perhaps has the most beautiful surroundings of any in Ireland. The back nine is through amazing dunes. The front nine has some average stuff thrown in with some dramatic stuff.

But it is not as good a golf course as Lahinch. The holes / golf just aren't quite the same quality. The design doesn't sit on the land quite as easily.

Thanks for that. I see on the Lahinch site that their Castle course is pretty cheap...would it be worth playing the following day?

The Castle course is underrated and is actually the site of most of the old course dating back to the 1890's.

It is much flatter and quite short but is quite a lot of fun. If you are not merely a "trophy hunter" with regards to courses then I'd definitely recommend it. Give you a sense of place by keeping you in one spot.

If your playing golf the following day might be worth looking at Doonbeg.

Yeah I'd say Lahinch. Absolutely beautiful course. Though if the wind keeps up the way it is at the moment your're going to have a tough time.

Lahinch. (superior course) but mainly because of the pints grub in O'Looneys.

If the pub's important then Lahinch is the better choice because the course is right on the edge of town and easily accessible if a lie-in is required! Pubs in Lahinch are excellent - can't remember the names though (can't think why).

Castle course is a fine track. Doesn't pack the punch of its sibling but it delivers the necessary links experience, and some fine bump n run education.

Tralee is out in the sticks a bit but does have more magnificent surroundings. My personal preference of the two is Tralee. Unlike The Architect, who has a much better handle on design issues, I find Tralee simply breath-taking and therefore the more desirable of the two venues. It may not have the design kudos of Lahinch (and its Who's Who list of designers), but there are so many amazing moments at Tralee that I would recommend it as a more memorable experience.

My vote would be for Tralee. Think I'd rate it as the best course I've ever played. Back 9 has some outstanding holes, really clever ones and the views are incredible.

Lahinch is excellent as well, played it for the first time over Christmas, I know my first reaction was that it wasn't as good as Tralee though!

Tralee is a great course but the town is a dump. I'd go for lahinch on balance....

Have to agree with this,Tralee is my favourite course anywhere in the world, but as just mentioned the town is a kip and i'd recommend staying well clear,
Lahinch as a town is a great place for a few pints,
why not come to Killarney and get the best of both :P

    no bias here;)

Thanks for the replies everyone. Lahinch is probably looking better as the social scene is important and also the chance to play another very good course the next day on the cheap.

Kevin, the photos of Tralee look great!

A friend of mine was stabbed in Tralee once.
    Was just ordering chips.

Haven't played Tralee yet but Lahinch is my favourite course in the country of those that I have played. Some hugely memorable holes and the town itself is great for a session afterwards.

Just to add that if you do choose tralee then the villages closer to the golf course are Ardfert and Fenit and both have nice pubs. I also saw on grab one today an offer in the Ballyroe Hotel has an offer for a one night stay with dinner and wine for two for 99 euro. This is a nice hotel with good food and a popular bar. It is not in the town of Tralee but it is close to the golf course and both villages.
