Looking at a few VW Touran at the moment and one is an 04 with 159k miles on it. Would that be considered very high or if its inspected by my mechanic and looks good is it worth buying ?

There are a few out there as well with about 140k miles on them.

If it's very cheap and has a fully documented service history then yes, otherwise i'd pass.

Its cheaper than the others out there, we're going to see it today and i'll check the paperwork. They are giving the standard 3 month warranty with it.

    Also NCT until next March.

High mileage usually goes hand in hand with various other mechanical as well as non-mechanical things. Be careful.

If it has a full service history and the relevant bits are replaced then its fine as long as the price matches the mileage.

What price would you be paying for a Touran with that sort of mileage ?

Its not high. I sold a 04 mondeo with 200k earlier this year. Car was perfect.

Anything below 250 k on a well serviced tdi is acceptable to me once it's good value.

Check that it has a FSH over the phone - have them read the whole thing out to you, and call the garages who stamped the book to verify that the work was actually done. If there are any problems with this (and there most likely will be) then you've saved yourself a trip.

This is Ireland, it is very unlikely that a 9 year old car will have a full service history.

I'd imagine if it's done 160k miles it's been reasonably well looked after. I'm sure it's nearly on it's second belt by now and once it's been reasonably serviced, it should be grand.

From a back street dealer i'd doubt it too. Still, without it i'd walk.

When I was selling the mondeo with 200k it had a full service history down to bulbs that were replaced. Not one person that called asked about it. Most were only concerned about the millage. If it had to have 120k and no service history it would have been a lot easier to sell.

People then wonder why clocking is so common in this country. Most people are more concerned with the numbers on the clock than the condition of the car.
