What makes Maynooth the place I should choose to do my degree? What is student life like there? How are the lecturers? What's the nightlife like? Do ye go out in Dublin?

Student life is great, must be the friendliest college in the country.

But a lot comes down to what subject you want to study.

Law? Prepare to be spending 100euro+ per textbook! Price of law books is crazy.

And prepare for plenty of people who will be selling theirs so you'll get them cheaper, don't worry OP

And they are in the library if you need them. I'm doing 2nd year law right now and so far I only bought 1 book which was required for lectures (€50) + Nutshells but I try to get them second hand. If you have any questions regarding law please do not hesitate to contact me, I'm always willing to help. :)

    Law in Maynooth is great,
Provided you don't get one of the incredible disappearing lecturers.

Welcome to the pain that science students feel.
Most of us got around that by not buying them (or Pirating them if we really needed them)

If your doing Computer Science don't expect to spend much time in the library, their selection of CS books is a bit thin and old.

Also "The Dragon Book" which is a standard CS textbook that is used almost everywhere is nothing to do with dragons.

There you go OP, all the advice you'll ever need.

Yeah, wish I'd done that; my computer science shelf is the most expensively assembled bit of my book collection.

Some of the prices are frankly insane.
I too have a shelf that is ether full or over priced books or needs armed guards to protect it.

    (I'm not sure which)

One of the law books costs over €600! No one is buying it for this reason and the lecturer was aware of this price therefore his notes were very detailed

How can a book cost €600? Is it gold plated!?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,625 ✭✭✭How so Joe

Law books are just phenomenally expensive.
I have an IP textbook on my shelf. It's less than an inch thick.
    It costs €225.
It's not unusual for these books to be phenomenally expensive - they're written by lawyers, who know very well how to charge for their time.

Nothing in the world of law comes cheap. The cost of qualifying is insane!

Now that I'm heading to NUIM, what should I expect from law there? :) is there a lot of individual work?

In my experience it's all individual work. Most assignments will be Case Notes or other types of essays though I never really had much CA. About one per module per semester and none for others.

The best advice I could give you is to keep up with your cases. It's much easier to study and keep note of them during the year than to be overloaded at exam time. They're also the best way to study and understand most legal topics in my experience.
