Just wondering which would be cheaper to tax and insure,
    A 1 litre corsa
    1.4l toyato corolla
Or a diesel car or car around 2l?

Can't decide which one to go for which would work out cheapest in the long run??

Depends on so many things, a brand new 2 litre diesel car will cost sub €200 a year in motor tax and will likely do 30% more mpgs than a 10 year old 2 litre diesel, however the new car will lose 50% of its purchase price in 3 years so if you spent 20k on it you will be left with a car worth 10k after 3 years so your tax saving isn't a saving when your shelling out 3k plus a year in depreciation.

What's your budget and what year cars are you talking about, the whole motor tax system changed in 2008 to emissions rather than cc based so that makes a difference.

Thanks for that. My budget is only 1500 max? Would it work out cheaper to get a corsa/golf/polo/corrola or a diesel?

How many miles a year would you be doing? If less than 10k I would go with a petrol car.

Probably over the course of the year it would be around that or just under it.

What age are you and what driving experience do you have, OP? You asking this makes me think this is a first purchase?

In which case as a general rule of thumb the smaller the engine the cheaper the insurance (and tax).

Could you give any reasons for that?

For a budget of €1500 I don't see much change of getting a reliable diesel car that will work out cheaper to run when you factor in the motor tax and fuel savings you will make.

Don't diesel engines 'sieze up' if they're not used much?

Although I have an Iveco Daily that, aside from burning oil, has done about 10 minutes of driving a day (two 5 minute trips) for the last 5 years and hasn't given even a slight bit of hassle. The rest of the van itself isn't in the best of shape (a bit rough) but it starts every time.

OP, My first car was/is a 2000 Ford Focus, 1.4. It's €385 for the year on tax and the car itself cost me €950 (though I plunged another 500 or so into it after buying). Insurance (I'm 24, never had any kind of insurance policy before, nor driving experience) through Chill.ie worked out at €1,310.

Focus was working out a bit more expensive than other cars, in all honesty, but I drove one a few times, quite liked it, and I really like the look of the Focus in general.

As I said in the OP's other thread, he/she will generally buy alot tidier petrol car for €1500 than a diesel. 10k miles per year doesn't warranty a diesel. Most diesel cars in this price range may need work done on them also.

would there be much of a difference in a 1l polo or a 1.4l corolla? i would prefer the corolla, surely it would cost much more to run and tax over the year?

    Sorry.
    I didn't realise OP's budget was 1500.
In that price range it's hard to find any reasonable diesel.

Best keep all of this together, this thread will be the OPs main one:
