Fuel efficiency in a fiat punto

    Hi guys,
I am just wondering what is the fuel efficiency on a fiat punto 01. I switched from a 1.8 petrol opel zafira to a fiat 1.2 fiat punto due to a loss of job so the cut backs had to be made. I am saving a few euro on petrol costs but I just thought it would be more to be honest. Maybe it's just me wishing for more lol. I put 20 euro in the other day and got 80 miles out of it before the light came on. Maybe it's right but it sounds very little miles to me fora 1.2 could there be something wrong with the car ?
    Any opinions welcome

That's about 29 mpg on very rough calculations as we don't know what you paid for the fuel. Still a punto should be doing more but it depends on the type of driving you do to.

    Hi there
I paid 1.56 for the petrol. It is all town driving I have been doing. I have been thinking Maybe it's the quality of the petrol. Don't know if that would make a difference.

With my corsa, if i put 20 euro of fuel into it beginning of week, i do rougly 10 miles a day, i would need more fuel by sunday, so i get about 70 miles out of 20 euro and its a 1.2. ..........

Maybe it's right so. I just thought I would get a little more considering I would put 40 euro into a 1.8 zafira and it would do for a week with some left over

A smaller engine size doesn't automatically equal better mpg unfortunately. There's an awful lot more variables involved in it.

Has the car been serviced recently?

    Hi there
It is due a service within the next 2000 miles I think I will book it in next week to see will it make a difference.

Try a different petrol station. If you really want to get a precise measurement of your mpg. Fill the car to the brim until it will take no more. Rest the trip drive it till its 1/4 tank or whatever. Refill it to the same spot and note the miles on the trip as well as the litres used. This will give you an accurate measurement of your mpg there is no other way otherwise your only guessing red light to red fuel light is not accurate as the light comes on at different times. It would be worth even looking at the air filter as if that's really dirty it would effect fuel consumption and show that the car needs to be serviced.

I've been tracking my mpg and get 35mpg in my 01 1.2 Punto.

    So €20 ~ 120miles @1.59

Check the tyre pressure is correct, low pressure will burn more fuel, nice cheap fix.

That's a seriously silly of measuring fuel usage. Fierce inaccurate

Brim the tank, do 100 miles, refil, calculate.

No point putting crappy cheap petrol into it either, those engines run sweeter on better juice. You'll get better mpg and may work out cheaper per week with better petrol. With crap petrol you run the risk of damaging the oxy sensor, leaving you with a rather dire driving experience.

Also, did you change the thermostat? It sticks open, causing the car never to warm up fully thus leaving the ECU to inject more petrol in as it thinks it's still cold. Common killer of mpgs

Combined you should see around the 44 mpg mark if it's an 8v, more if it's a 16v

Talking from experience, nout outta my arse ;)

With respect DGT, I think the issue is the town driving. Doing all town driving will never make for good mpg. 29 sounds low enough but in town my 156 is at low 20's. That's just the way it is.

    Missed the town driving part....

Alas I still stand over what petrol goes in and if the thermo has been changed

Not in a 1.2 you don't, I've had four of them. Maybe in a diesel. Unless you push it 50% of the time.

Cena, because it's you, I'll run with that, but I've had them from new, diesels and petrols, and never, ever, no matter how I've grannied them, have I ever seen even vaguely close to 50mpg from a 1.2 Fire derived engine. They are not an economical engine. High thirties is usual, fourties is hypermiling and 50's is getting the maths wrong, IMOHO. I've had brand new diesels and then hopped into new petrols and been gutted at the crap mileage(company cars). I have utterly no idea how you get 50+ mpg from a petrol 1.2. I really, really, struggle to believe you.

What do you mean by that?
I'll put up a pic tomorrow. Its what the trip things says.

OK, I rest my case. You aint getting 52 mpg in a 1.2 Punto petrol. The Trip thing is an optimistic Italian charmer. For real, if you're actually seeing a genuine 40-44MPG I'd be impresed. 52 aint happening, no matter how you drive it. Just not possible.

Had a 2 door punto a few years ago and would get around 36~42 mpg depending on the driving.

I used to drive 80km per day round trip for work in my car plus 20km round trips to visit my gf prob twice a week. I spent approx 55-65 per week on petrol...

My car was an 02 punto.

If i remember correctly my puntos petrol lighf came on just after the clock dropped below a quarter of a tank. It used to take approx 75e to fill from empty so it could be that it wasn't much above the warning light after your top up.

Edit - for reference this wasnt years ago. Was just over a month ago.

    I own a 2005 Punto 1.2.
In winter I average 6.8L /100km and in summer this drops to around 6.0L /100 km. For the old timers, this is around 41MPG in winter to 47MPG in summer. These figures are actual calculations based on real Km and amount of fuel used (not the onboard computer) in a mixed urban / motorway environment.
The consumption depends GREATLY on how I drive. If I wring its neck (euphemism) or drive like a twat, my consumption rises quite a bit. I also find that cleaning out the throttlebody every 6-8 months helps considerably.

Thanks for all the replys lads. Lot of different things to try. I think I will book her in for a good service and see what happens. I will chance the tyre pressure aswell. What is the right psi for the tyres ?

When I used to drive my Bravo van about, the highest mpg I ever got from it was about 49.3mpg. 1.2 16v and it was very very hard to get that from it. It had a 6 speed from a Punto Sporting in it too which would have marginally helped. That was measured by brimming it and refilling after 100 miles.

Whilst 50 + mpg might be possible on the likes of a 6 speed Stilo, I can't see it possible on a standard Punto. Mid 40s is a lot closer to reality
