I have been tuning around today and noticed that the RTE 252 Long Wave Transmitter is off air all day, RTE are still giving out the frequency at the top of the hour and on several links, perhaps the high winds have caused the service to be off air, anybody know ?

A good sign. Someone was banging on about them switching it off soon.

Don't read too much into it. Even if the transmitter is due to be switched off later this year, there will always be maintainence that is essential. In fact, even when it is switched off permanently, there will still be maintaince required to the mast, as long as it stands there.
The Athlone masts required regular painting even though it wasn't in use by RTE for many years. probably the main reason why they demolished one of the masts.
Tullamore, like Clarkestown, still needs to have the aviation lights maintained.
