Renting in Delgany

Looking at the possibility of renting here. What do people think of the area? What are the amenities like?

Our budget is roughly 800 p/m and Dublin was offering us nothing for that price (studios mostly). This is our first time renting.

I work out in Ballycoolin and currently live in Rathfarnham (family home). I don't mind the extra journey as Delgany seems to be offering more value for our budget. Work has agreed to sort me out with petrol expenses so that's pretty cool too.

It currently takes me 30 mins to get to work from Rathfarnham (getting to the M50 seems to take up most of my time) and a friend of friend who lives in Delgany said the journey to Ballycoolin would only take 35 mins as it's pretty much straight out onto the motorway.

I don't mind staying a bit farther out (we were ok with looking at Bray so this isn't much farther). Our idea is to stay in the best place we can for our budget that allows us to save as well. If petrol wasn't subsidised it might be a different matter altogether. I know too many friends that are spending all of their money on rent just for the location - their places leave a lot to be desired and I definitely don't want to go down that route.

I previously posted in a separate thread about buying a place however our plans have changed and we are now looking to rent.

Anyways, I've rambled on now. I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts.

    Thanks in advance.

Id be surprised if you could do that journey in anything less than 50 minutes door to door. Ballycoolin as im sure you know isnt the handiest ind est to get into or out of. Then add in at least 35 Minutes on the M50 alone.

    Hi,

I get in and out with no problems. I'm in Northwest Bus Park. The only slight delay (maybe 4-5 mins) is on the slip road getting off the carriageway at eBay there. Getting home, I don't go down by the NAC (always mental). I take a few back roads and am on the M50 in less than 10 mins. Ballycoolin doesn't bother, I currently do that trip everyday, it's Delgany I'm concerned about. Thanks though for the response.

The extra costs of living in Delgany will remove any savings made by the rent there. Believe me, I've done it.

If you can, try move closer to work. That's the beauty of renting.

We're currently looking at moving a bit closer. TBH, I'm really starting to like Delgany though. It looks really nice and if it came to not being able to save more by being out there but spending the same amount if we were to be staying in a small studio in Dublin, I think I'd definitely choose Delgany.

When you say extra costs, do you mean petrol etc?

This is our first time renting so we're trying to learn as we go.

Taxis from town will be a absolute killer. So socialising with friends becomes difficult. Work nights out as well because of the cost or the early leave due to the buses/trains.

The sheer time sink invested into travelling on public transport as well as the cost. You either put up with hours on buses/trains or you find yourself driving everywhere.

The cost of petrol, the miles will start to clock up living that far from Dublin. That vastly increases wear and tear and the reliance on your car.

If your car breaks down, how to you get to work? Have you considered the cost of maintaining two cars, in relation to maintaining one?

When you say our...is it just two of you? You could easily rent an apartment in Waterville (10 min walk from Ballycoolin) for under €800

    Hi,

I work in a family owned business so work nights out only consist of the christmas party once a year. Work is taking full responsibility for the cost of the car as well so that's the biggest negative factor taken care of.

In terms of socialising, we're at the point where regular weekend nights out are a thing of the past, it's now mostly drinks in friends' houses etc. My dad lives in ballsbridge and my Mum lives in Rathfarnham so we'd always have a place to crash the head if any unplanned nights cropped up out of the blue.

We really want to get the best standard of living that we can for the price that we have agreed upon. If the car was unfunded, it would be a totally different story.

I took a spin out to Delgany last night to see and fell in love with the area and the apartments. I'm going to view one tomorrow just to see.

can't think why you'd voluntarily give yourself such an awkward commute - there must be nice areas closer to Blanch than Delgany.

but anyway, if you do like the area, have look at Greystones, at least there are a few shops, restaurants, the Dart, the beach etc - Delgany is fairly dead at the best of times.

What time do you leave Blanchardstown to go home? There are almost always tailbacks shortly after exit 16/17 southbound on the M50, they last until after just before the first Greystones exit and remain slow up until Kilmacanogue.

There's no way you'll go from Delgany to Blanch in 35 minutes in any sort of traffic and the other way around will take longer due to the tailbacks around Bray.

You've said that work will pay the increase in petrol, however you'll buy tires more often, have to service the car more often, break pads, etc etc etc. Have you factored in those costs and will work pay for them?

Jesus she's talking about moving to Delgany not Donegal.. Take another look at your map.

OP Delgany is a nice spot to live in it used to have a bit of an uppity vibe goin on but not so much anymore. I assume you're looking at eden gate or Delgany wood.

The extra expenxe in fuel will probably be minimal but the traffic heading that direction after work can be a nightmare around bray headin through kilmac. particularly if there's bad weather or a crash.

I totally agree with your thinking I'd rather live somewhere nice and travel that bit further to it than live in a shoe box on the door step of work.

    Good Luck

But there is no where nice in Delgany that's within their budget. :)

Two hours commute a day is not a nice standard of living.

Paying the cost of petrol, does not pay the cost of a car. Hence why mileage covers more then the cost of the petrol.

There are two of you. What happens to your girlfriend during the day?

There is more to socialising then just drinking in town or drinking in General. And there is sweet f all in Delgany.

Sounds like you had already made your mind up before asking. Best thing to do is make the mistake, so you learn from it.

Very doable give me Delgany over Blanch any day of the week. We moved much further south and I'm commuting to Donnybrook every day it's about 50 minutes but the lifestyle is worth it, as for going out in Dublin if you've got a kid that's not an issue, be lucky to get out once a month, and if we have to go out hotels about sixty euro.
