    Hi,

I received an email from UPC today advising me of changes to my T&C.s

I have looked through the proposed changes and they are only slight but what I was wondering was this.

Comreg say I can freely cancel out of my contract once the T&C's change and I have to be given one months notice of any changes.

    www.askcomreg.ie/mobile/terms_and_conditions.166.LE.asp

At the moment I have the phone, BB and TV. I never use the phone and I pay 69.99. My contract is not over until November.

Has anyone ever used a T&C change to their advantage and does anyone have any suggestions?

    Hey,

Got the same email. I believe Meteor customers got out of contracts when T&C's changed before. UPC also put the price up for me by a fiver.

This was quickly followed up with an offer of 3 "treats" via email. Faster Broadband, watch TV online or on iDevices, and free install of their new Horizon HD box, only if I sign up to a new contract I'm sure!!

    Go Team!

It even says it in the mail

"Please remember that our TV, Broadband and Phone service remains excellent value. However, you have the right to cancel or downgrade your service within 30 days of receipt of this notice without penalty if you choose not to accept these changes."

I just started a new contract with them and could get out but the thing is, there's no one offering the BB speed i'm getting with UPC so there's no point really!

+1 A fact glaringly omitted from the original post where the OP implied that he only knew of the exit opportunity because of what he was told by Comreg.

Lest anyone is confused - the e-mail from UPC explicitly tells you (in a separate paragraph, as quoted above) that you can cancel your contract within 30 days because the Ts & Cs are changing.

We're good at slagging off service suppliers on boards, let's acknowledge it when the consumer is properly informed by the supplier of his/her rights.

Slagging off was never my intention sir. I love UPC as a service. The broadband has been 10 years ahead of anyone else in this country and I enjoy the tv service even if it is under used.

My original query focused around using this to my advantage. ie. can I get rid of the phone and reduce the price or would I have to cancel the whole lot?

In fact I don't think any of the posts above slagged UPC :)

I wasn't specifically referring to you when I said that 'we' on boards are good at slagging off service providers.

In your case, what I was getting at was your first post which to remind you said the following....

Why if you 'looked through the proposed changes' which included the statement that you could cancel because of a change on the Ts & Cs, did you choose to omit this fact and instead point at Comreg as being the source of this information?

UPC sent you an e-mail in which they explicitly told you that you could cancel your contract. Your decision to omit this fact from your post and quoting Comreg instead gave the misleading impression that the option to cancel was deliberately concealed by UPC which it was not.

I got the same email, it's actually quite funny that the same day I receive the email about increased prices they have a flyer in the paper advertising 50mb broadband, TV and phone for €50 per month (for 6 months). I'm thinking about cancelling my current contract and taking out a new one.

That's going to be a saving of 20 quid a month if I do it. I reckon they must have planned ahead with that one. I remember a few years ago 02 changed their T&Cs and a friend of mine cancelled only 4 months into a contract and walked away with an iPhone.

@coylemj I never actually saw that part of the mail. My bad. I just googled T&Cs comreg and that's how I got the link.

Could someone please post up the email as I haven't received it. Strangely enough I never get any emails from upc even though my address is register with them.

The first part of the e-mail was tailored according to my contract so they told me that my 'Anywhere 100' phone package would now have 150 minutes. This is followed by the following which is probably appended to the e-mail they sent to all their customers receiving an e-mail...

    General Terms & Conditions

Finally, we are making some small changes to our general terms and conditions which will come into effect on the 28th June 2013. These changes reflect TV content that you access online. Also certain TV providers require a unique identifier to be placed on some of their sports events. We have updated our terms and conditions to detail how this may be processed by UPC. To view detailed changes please click here.

Please remember that our TV, Broadband and Phone service remains excellent value. However, you have the right to cancel or downgrade your service within 30 days of receipt of this notice without penalty if you choose not to accept these changes.

At UPC we are committed to providing you with the very best entertainment services and we will continue to invest in our Fibre Power network to ensure we deliver on this for you.

As a responsible eco-friendly business, we’re conscious of reducing unnecessary wasted paper and increasing efficiency. Help us by switching to email, so you don’t miss out on news, upgrades & updates from UPC. Click here and enter in your customer number and email address.
You will receive another email with some further news from UPC.

    Yours Sincerely.

Personally, I'd stick with the pay increase (in theory) and use it as a bargaining chip with my annual friend in the loyalty department, who I speak to every year. The call lasts 35-40 minutes, and is always full of banter.

In fairness, I know it is a price increase (and it is justifiable overall), but the service is exemplary overall. Sure, some have issues, but it is the best broadband in the country. I'll stick as a customer, gladly.
