    hi everyone

if buying a car, would you put much value on a car that only has 20k miles compared to 45 k ?

If the 45k one were a year younger, would you value the 1 year older car with 20k miles more ?

diesel octavia we are talking about by the way

It depends on how old the cars are.

    2009 and 2010

2009 has very low mileage and 1 owner

2010 has double the mileage and not sure of owners

20k less mileage to me also means an extra year of ownership

Are both cars the same spec eg ambiente / elegance. That would also make a difference.

I'd prefer the 2010, diesels are meant to be driven

Id be inclined to agree. Im not sure Id want a four year old diesel that has done 5k miles a year.

I agree - all other things being equal such as spec, service history, general condition etc I'd go for the 2010 too - 45K on a 2010 is not a high mileage car.

Mileage is not the absolute indicator of the amount of wear an engine has gone through. Engines suffer higher wear when they are cold. A low mileage car may have done more short journeys in which the engine does not get properly warmed up, suffering more wear than a higher mileage car that has done most of its mileage cruising our fine motorway network.
