sky installation help

    Hey guys,

My dad has a long time sky dish and box installed. I gave him my spare sky plus box.

Obviously because his installation is old, he only has one run of cable to the box so he can't watch and record different stations at the same time.

What needs to be done from a technical perspective to enable this.
The cable obviously but what about the dish?

Is this something I could try myself with the correct parts as I'm handy enough

First off, does he have a Sky subscription? The '+' features of the box won't work without it.

Yeah. He has a sky subscription and I rang sky to enable the box so recording and pause etc works. Just he can only do it on the same channel that he is watching.

I presume the type of stuff I need to do is check for spare terminals on the lnb, replace if not. Run cable from dish to box.

Just need specifics, part recommendations etc

And a "quad-output" LNB, if he doesn't already have one.

The dish is probably the guts of ten years old.

Any type or model or 4 port lnb required to ensure compatibility?

One of these would be fine.

Google 'Sky quad lnb' or similar, should get you plenty of cheap examples. Has to be the Sky type & make sure it comes with adapters for older dishes.

New dish & lnb together would be fairly cheap too, but you'd have to know how to align it after fitting.

    Cheers guys.

    So:
    sky quad core lnb
    Some f connectors
    rg6 satellite cable
    Cable clips
    Rubber boots

    That sound about right?

Don't forget the ladder and don't move the dish while you're changing the lnb.

Hah! Its a bungalow so could almost access without ladder!

Will bear lnb movement in mind.!

http://www.tvtrade.ie/quad-lnb.html - see the highlighted note as regards fitting a quad LNB on an old Sky dish

I wouldn't install RG6 outdoors. Use decent cable such as WF100. Check out how to fit the F plugs.
Modern LNBs have a pull-down rain cover and don't need rubber boots. Just use silicone grease.

    (It's not a "quad-core" - you are thinking of computer CPUs! It's a quad-output LNB.)
