    Hi,

I have a garden table something like this one.

Unfortunately on a windy night the glass was broken & I've just been quoted €395 for replacement glass

Can anyone think of any possible alternatives to glass?
    The size needed is 115cm * 181cm.

I was thinking maybe some waterproof thick plywood painted with some kind of plastic coating or maybe tiling. My wife suggested maybe some kind of fake marble / resin type thing.

    Any thoughts?

Just a cheap piece of 18mm ply will do fine.

anything else will outlast the furniture if its kept outdoors.

Most likely is covered on house insurance. Just an option to consider.

that aside, massy is correct. No way that will cost you €385. Not. Chance.

I did get another quote from another glass company & they quoted €512 :eek::eek:

The glass needs to be black toughened glass.
    Size is 115cm by 181cm.
Not sure of the thickness but I don't think it's a factor.

I expected to pay around €200 max.

Could claim on house insurance but haven't gone down that road yet - if I get it for around €200 I probably won't bother as I think I have an excess of €250 anyway.

    Thanks for the replies

Ply base and decorative tiles / mosaic?
Might be a bit heavy though...

    Yeah thought of that alright.
Presume I'd be best using marine ply (I'm not plywood expert - Google told me this)

Not sure if I'd have to seal it in some way before applying tiles?

Anyway - glass might still be an option once I hear back from Massy086

If you go with marine ply I would coat it in epoxy before painting it black or tiling it,you can see in my video below how good you can make plywood look :)
Another option might be black plexiglass or lexan, these should be able to give you a price http://www.accessplastics.com/about-us/

    Nice boat!

Looks like marine ply is a good option if I don't go with glass again.

    Hi Fergal,
I think I'm going to go with the marine ply option..
Can you tell me the name of an epoxy that you'd recommend - I'm not familiar with them at all.
Is it ok to put a couple of coats of black paint on top of that then or do I need any undercoat / primer.

Thinking of finishing then with a clear coat of yacht varnish.

    Am I missing anything?

    Thanks.

I use west system 105 resin and 205 hardener http://www.marineparts.ie/paint-and-maintenance/epoxy-repair-kits/epoxy-kits/#ty;pagination_contents;/paint-and-maintenance/epoxy-repair-kits/epoxy-kits/page-2/ you can also get little pumps for the bottles that make mixing easy.
For primer I use international Pre-Kote and for finish I used Toplac paint this has a very tough gloss finish so you may not need to clear coat.
Another option is to add graphite powder to the epoxy while your mixing this will turn it black and make it very tough, you might also be able to buff it to a high shine, worth doing a little tester to see if it works.

Have you considered plastic sheeting as an alternative to glass http://www.365plastics.ie/plastic-sheets.html?
