So - why do patio doors usually open out instead of in?

I see them both ways quite often actually, Mine open in as i had seen too many strained and busted double doors when opened out and caught by the wind.Opening out does help with not having two doors stuck into your sun
room alright when open on our rare sunny days:-)
a sacrifice i could put up with tbh. If i decide to ever change it would be a sliding patio door for me

They can be fitted either way. It just depends on personal choice. Most people prefer to have them open out so they don't take up space in the Room. Also in the hope that we might get a little sunshine from time to time.

The reason doors open out is to allow a quick exit in the event of a fire. If you have a number of people trying to exit at the same time it makes it more difficult to open a door inwards.. This is more applicable to commercial premises but too often you find them incorrectly fitted in pubs, hotels etc.

For draught sealing & security purposes it's better to have them opening out - harder to break in through an outward opening door - or so I'm told.

Its easier to break in through a door opening outward, for a start the hinges are on the outside and its much easier to lever the door outward off the frame than inward off the frame from the outside. Most patio doors copy the french door detail which was a externally opening door, originally fitted with parliment hinges to fold out flat against the external walls both sides of the door. Its down to personal choice really but a good quality outward opening would be great aswel as a safe fire situation choice.
