hi all, I am aware of the SI NO 342/2006 - Road Traffic (Lighting of Vehicles) (Blue and Amber Lamps) Regulations, however, i have been told there is no Regulations RE putting reflective markings on ones car etc. Does anyone know if this is true, Ive looked up the Irish statute book but can’t find anything on it?

    Hiya,

Not aware of any regs regarding cars. Larger vehicles are dealt with in legislation i.e. HGV side and rear markings, safety and other standards have an impact on vehicles working such as ambulances, and the UK does have specific marking standards, albeit at quite a low level, and these are sometimes quoted as best practice.

There are EU best practice guidelines for emergency markings.

However the legalities in Ireland are covered below.

Just reading that goldiefish, can't understand for the life of me why the customs can't have blue lights in/on their vehicles and yet the prison service can !

Customs rarely if ever have to race to a situation that is so the sensitive it can justify breaking RTA regulations. If they do, they just ring us for an escort.

Prison service on the other hand are constantly under blue light escorts by AGS for high profile/high value prisoners, hence why they have them. It makes sense.....don't fully agree with it, but it does make sense.

Agh i understand, My original thinking was more along the lines of stopping vehicles, if im correct in saying, the customs in Northern ireland have blues on their unmarked volvos.

It's still very much a legal minefield, it really needs to be looked at & be properly codified & defined. The whole area of Hi-Viz marking & lighting is a disaster. There are no set rules for EMS, recovery trucks, security companies, maintenance vehicles etc.

For example, the Coast Guard are permitted to have blues fitted, but don't have an exemption under the RTA. So what's the point?

We have a local volunteer rescue service who were fitting blues and generally driving like lunatics. After much negotiation & some judicious application of the statutes this has stopped. But they got around the blues & twos issue by registering one of their jeeps as an ambulance.

This technically not only allows them to have lights & sirens but also gives exemption.

They've marked up their jeeps with yellow & red panels, so if you see it coming you immediately think it's the Fire Service.

While it's all very noble & worthwhile, and don't misunderstand me, they provide a very necessary service, it's fraught with all sorts of problems while it remains unregulated.

With regard to the Prison Service, they are permitted to have them fitted, but don't have the exemption except when under escort by AGS.

Interestingly enough, there is no mention of the Army EOD being permitted to have them fitted :P but again, would have the exemption when under escort.

A tort lawyer's wet dream waiting to happen

The likes of heavy plant/HGV etc would be covered under the SHAW 2005 act when using amber beacons(wide loads etc) bin trucks/ tipper&construction trucks along with recovery vehicles.
