Complete novice here looking to get some tips on taking up golf......I have a hand me down set of clubs that will do for the time being, I am just wondering.......

I'm 6 foot 5 and have a bit of an issue tee-ing off using Irons......Are longer clubs essential, or is my stance more than likely completely wrong?

any other long streaks of misery playing golf?

Use the Smartfit online fitting at http://www.golfsmith.com/customclub
There are a number of these out there but this will get you started, at your height you will more than likely need 1/2 inch longer than standard plus the loft/lie angle would also need to be checked.

    6 foot 5 - your well named.

I'd say off the shelf are no good for you.

Mate of mine 6" 4 had to get longer shafts.

You will definitely need to be fitted properly as off the shelf sets only cover people in the mid 5 ft range. The problem you have now is if you adjust your height and stance to allow for using shorter clubs you will be only storing up problems for when you get more suitable clubs. Golf is not a cheap game to pursue and so you should save for a proper set before too long. Just make sure to go to some of the reputable fitting shops for your Clubs. Make sure you like the look and feel of the clubs you buy rather than just accepting what you're being offered. You will have to play with them for a long time.
Don't be afraid to ask to trial them or a similar set before you commit. If there not willing to lend you a set go somewhere else for your fitting.
Also try different shafts to see which you prefer.
Woods are a little different in that the technology keeps improving and so there are new and better Drivers nearly every year.

Be patient with your progress as this is the most technical game you will ever play.
It can be infuriatingly annoying at times but no matter how bad a days golf you're having. There's is always one good shot which will bring you back.

    Welcome to the asylum.

Hey guys I've been thinking about taking Golf up properly after a recent trip to the Driving Range after a long absence.

I'm 5''8 and if the Ping(on that site mentioned above) set up for hand, finger and arm length by default are averages, I was pretty much bang on what they had in those slots.

Would a set around the E150 mark be better to start off with.
Was thinking off getting the set of Dunlop Tour Elite graphite and steel set for E130 from Sportsdirect.
If I could use them for a few months to get competent, I'd happily sell them for E50 and invest properly.

How much of a disadvantage would it be to use bog standard sizes?.
I'm a student so probably couldn't afford the customs anyway.
For someone of my height would a cheap set be the best way for me to learn before customising my size and club quality down the line.

You could probably pick up a decent set of second hand irons for 150-200. My advice would be to try them for the time being. If things don't go right they will probably still be worth the same price you paid for them in 6 months. Second hand is the way to go IMO if your not fully committed. It will cost you nothing if you decide it's not for you.
