How Do I Compare Older Cameras With New Ones?

My wife had a Cannon PowerShot Sx20 IS.

    I paid ~350euro for it.
It has 12.1 Megapixel and a 20x zoom.

She really enjoyed it; but it no longer works (we've had it repaired once but it didn't last)

I'm looking at cameras now and I'm a little confused by the prices and the stats. For example I found this camera, a Fujifilm FinePix S2980 Digital Camera

    It is ~100 euro.
It has 14 Megapixel and an 18x zoom.

Does this mean a 100 euro camera is roughly the equivalent of a 350 euro camera from a little over three years ago?

I've heard that the number of pixels doesn't tell the whole story - but I'm also not sure how to tell what an equivalent camera would be?

The current equivalent for the SX20 is the SX50 which is still in the 350 price range.

Honestly the biggest loss is the hot shoe, if you weren't using an external flash the 2980 should be fine
