The problem with the Sopranos is that it is so good you will find it hard to watch another series after it.
Two years on after buying the boxset i still haven't found anything to replace it with. :-(

It's one of the best tv shows ever. However my favorite tv show would have to be Oz.

I'm sad now 'cause I've seen all of Breaking Bad, The Wire, Twin Peaks and now, The Sopranos too. Lot of good television but for me I don't think episodic storytelling gets better than those 4 in the television medium. Hope I'm wrong*.

*Not interested in Game of Thrones.

Still half a season of Breaking Bad to come this summer.

In my opinion, The Sopranos is very over-rated. I found the series
very formulaic and predictable. Here is a post I made a few days ago
in another thread, discussing good and bad shows to watch.

I'm probably going to get some stick for this but I wouldn't
bother if I was you. It just goes stale after a few episodes and turns into a
"dysfunctional family" drama with the occasional murder and organized crime
    sub-plot thrown in.
    Each season works like this:
Look out Tony, you've got a new rival / oh you've killed him /
Your marriage is in trouble / your kids are becoming adults /
Your henchmen are unreliable / You are worried you are going soft
Someone from your past threatens your position / Yawn.

    That's my opinion.

Yeah. I said I'm sad now but more Breaking Bad to come will be happy making. Should be good.

And you're entitled to it. To be fair, you can boil any of the other series mentioned down to bulletpoints and make it all sound like no great shakes. I believe that a show really lives and dies on the performances of the actors and the nuances of the writing. After all, the great plot points are rehashed time and time again throughout the history of storytelling but it's how that story is told that is important. I think the Sopranos did that well. Kids tend age and grow, people can be unreliable, people want to usurp positions of power especially in a business like the Italian Mafia. That those plot points recur from series to series doesn't surprise me.

Have watched Sopranos all the way through twice over past few years. It's amazing, right up there with The West Wing (which I have only recently watched), Oz & Game of Thrones as best TV series (have yet to watch the Wire or Breaking Bad).

    Watch it. Now.

The Sopranos is simply one of the greatest tv shows ever made. Never mind anyone saying otherwise, the acting, the humour, the violence, the twists are all superbly done.

Great show, Tony's visits to the shrink allow you to see what's going through his mind. If there's one show you watch before you die this is it, have yet to meet a person who didn't like it. Buy yourself the box set, looking around €50 for it, best money you will ever spend
