Unfortunately there is a serious amount of blood on the ground, cbs describing the attack as a IED type explosion - i.e. iraq type stuff.

ITV news lady just said there were 300 Britons and 100 Irish runners participating. Hope they are all ok. Crazy stuff...

Explosions seemed to take place around 4hours 9min mark based on the videos so I guess anyone say sub 3 45 should be away from the finish at that stage.

Hope everyone is ok, pretty awful stuff :(

Nope, The second wave started 20 minutes after the general race. Most of those finishing would have been around the 3:45 mark :(

"THE DEPARTMENT OF Foreign Affairs says that so far there have been no reports of any Irish citizens being caught up in the explosions that have rocked the Boston Marathon in the US today.

Figures from the organisers show that 108 Irish citizens were registered to run in the Boston Marathon where two explosions went off at the finish line today leaving dozens injured and a number of people dead."

All well in hotel here with abhainn. Happened at 2:50pm so 4:50 in for wave 1, 4:30 wave 2 and 4:10 wave 3. Some hotels in lock down. Know a couple in westin, finished around same time, she got back into hotel he missed cut off they won't let him in despite having ID etc. the JFK explosion means it's ongoing so advised to stay in hotel rooms not gather in groups.

Yeah after I posted it I figure I wasn't right with that comment, just returning to edit it.

Not that the time mattered as by looks of it the spectators took the worst of it so it :(

One thing i just can't understand about watching the news and reading twitter is....what the **** is wrong with people?

At such a serious event what the **** is wrong with people that they think its a good idea to take out their mobile to shoot video or take pictures and then post them on twitter of people that are injured.

Be a decent human being and put your phone away and help out in anyway you can, if thats moving a barrier helping with first aid (if you know it) or just getting the hell out of the way, then do that!

The very last thing I'd think about at any accident is taking out my mobile to take pictures or post stuff on twitter,

Whats wrong with people that they want to get in the way and take photos of people in terrible pain at such an awful time? There's enough news crews and press already at the site.

I'm sure these phones could have been put to better use to enable other people to let friends and family know they are safe.

I had just crossed the finish line about 20 seconds before the first blast. Came in a few seconds behind Gerry Carr from the dublin marathon who had kept me going for the last 2 kilometers. Very loud blast, then smoke and the sound of breaking glass showering down. It was surreal, very hard to know how you'd react in that situation till it happens. I just tried to move away when I heard the second blast and started to get worried was I walking into the path of next one.

A stampede started after that, people getting trampled. All the while most of the normal stuff at the end of a marathon kept going on....people collecting medals, getting drinks etc. I'm here with an college team of 10 running for charity. Most of those finishing with me were the charity runners in wave 3. The enormity of it is just hitting home now. 20 seconds slower and I was right at the site and they are saying on tv over here that there was a device that didnt go off on copley square. Exactly where I was when the other 2 went off.

Thank god all my gang are ok. Thoughts are with the injured and deceased and their friends and families.

Some people were probably already filming their loved ones finishing. Or the spectacle. Police and law enforcement now want all videos and pictures as it may help catch the people..

It really was horrific news to wake up to this morning. I'm stunned, and how sad it is that it has come to the stage where security needs to be brought in for a spread out public gathering like a marathon. Really relieved that all the posters here are ok.

The more people filming, taking photos the better, it may be that images can help the police track down who planted the devices and murdered 3 people.

CNN interviewed the guy in orange who fell near the finish, 78 in his 40-somethingth marathon and will not be giving them up!

He looked to be a bit wobbly before the explosion so wasn't surprised that he fell over. The people in yellow by the barriers didn't move by the effect of the blast, but that guy in orange and another person by the line had probably tripped over their tired legs.

As to people filming. Well, most would have been filming prior to the explosion.

Horrific to see and hear about all this. As someone who has been both a competitor and spectator / steward / official as well at club, county and provincial competitions, just watching / supporting those taking part (and know so many that do likewise), I can relate far too well to those that were caught up in it. Such a senseless act
