September is loads of time to train, I wouldn't worry about the figures... a 100km charity cycle will be tough but its no great feat and really wouldn't merit needing any scientific training plan... just get the miles in the legs... preferably outdoors as there is much the trainer won't be able to simulate for you...this is a nice little booklet with lots of tips and suggested training plan for 100 and 200kms... http://www.wicklow200.ie/2011/skguide.pdf

Not saying that 100 km is easy but got on a bike 6 weeks ago and I did the DSI event on Saturday the only thing I did was get out on the bike as often as possible just try to up your distance by 10% a week.best of luck with it

100km will probably take you around 4 - 5 hours pedalling. You may be better focusing on building to something like a 3 hour spin/70km in modest increments. It might be worth trying an intermediate distance event - say a 50k in six or eight weeks to see how are feeling. |I'd agree that it's not really worth bothering about power figures when training for a 100k sportif. Just get out and ride your bike - you'll need the experience of riding on the road in real conditions (turns, stops, starts, wind, rain - maybe even sunshine)

Miles, miles, miles and more miles, with appropriate rest in between. It's the simple way rather than try to over-complicate things with power meters.

Build up gradually to it at what seems comfortable to you.

Im looking at doing a few 80-100km sportivs over the summer but Im finding Im max'd out with 70km rides.
When I was doing 50-60km spins I was coming home with loads of energy.
But +70km spins and Im wacked. I know its been windier in recent months and my speed is also up a bit.

But has anyone advice on stretching to 100km.

Another question... In 10km runs there are pacers so you can keep a steady pace and also stick in a group. Is there something similar for cycling. Ive seen lots of sportives where the fast guys are in a big group and getting all the benefits of group riding but everyone else is on their own dealing with the elements on their own... If a group was too hard you could take a break for 10 mins and sit in with the next group down...

All good advice. For 100k in September you have loads of time. Start low if you like, even 25 or 30k and build it up by 5 or 10k a week. You'll be up to 65 or 70k in no time and if you can do that on your own you'll easily get 100k in a group. Most people riding in a group for the first time are amazed at the difference it makes. Don't worry about pacemakers. Tag along with a bunch and see how you go. If they are too fast for you then drop back and try the next one. All the hot shots will go off the front like they are Dan Martin but forget about them. Main thing is drink plenty, eat enough, find a pace that suits you and enjoy.

If your able to do 60km spins handy and then dieing at 70 plus I'd suspect your out of energy , what are you eating before hand? Are you taking on water and energy during cycle? Nothing wrong with a feeling the effects of the cycle. Are you maybe pushing too high a average speed , maybe back off your average speed till you push past your wall..

OP , first time you sign up to a 100km the hardest thing about is the number , I honestly think once you get past that you will take all other 100km spins in your stride once your fit. Get out on the road now , you don't need trainer at this time of year- turn the negatives into positives eg wind is your friend and makes you stronger ,after all you can't turn off the wind the day of your cycle. Are you training on your own? I wouldn't worry about power meters when it's finishing you need to work on for now, what's your max distance at moment? Get miles in legs . 100km is more do able than you think unless your seriously unfit. Two30 km cycles midweek and a longer spin on a Sunday would have you flying for it in plenty of time

I only started at January and did the 102km Tour de Cure at the weekend. nothing on a trainer prepares you for the faster speeds and ease of cycling which a big group will give you. I was stunned to be travelling at speeds of 35km in the group when I only ever manage about 27km fastest on my own. when I dropped back on the hills cos I couldn't maintain the speeds I just joined in with the next group behind me so never on my own much. you also need experience on manovouring around corners, potholes, rubbish on the road, the wind against you and across you, etc so get out on the bike. I never thought at Christmas I'd have a 100km under my belt at this stage but its onwards to the 170km Ring of Kerry now :) definitely remember to eat plenty before heading out and drink drink drink when you are out. It took us 4hr 6mins at the wkend.
