browsing for a new car, suggestions welcome

Im not in the market yet, but I fancy doing some browsing.

Im looking for a hard wearing car, (truck/suv) that can fill these criteria.

Cheap, reliable/easy to repair. hard wearing, must be able to cope with roads in bad condition. (take a beating every day and still keep ticking over) not necessarily off road driving, but through the country side. quite well equipped, comfortable ride. room in the back for a chest of draws (incase i ever want to buy a chest of draws)

Ideally id like a Japanese (toyota hilux, Mitsubishi animal) pick up, but probably not cost effective petrol wise.

Ive also looked at a skoda yeti, but the oldest i can see on done deal is 2010, so initial cost will be too much.

any opinion on the 'rugged city cars' the juke etc or are they just bulky looking saloon cars, and all show?

    any other suggestions?

Subaru Forester 2.0 NA from about 2004.

Raised estate, 2.0 engine, good power from it, ok economy, comfortable, AWD system, high ground clearance, tough, capable off road, can be got with high spec for reasonable prices on donedeal.ie, not too expensive to tax each year, rear seats fold down perfectly flat really easily.

Not as big, heavy or expensive to run as a hilux/L200/Triton. Much better road handling on a Forester too.

I've driven a 2004 2.5 XT version with 200K km on it and it was great to drive. Solid, didn't show its age/mileage at all, comfortable to sit in.

Avoid the turbo models. Less reliable and more expensive/harder to insure.

I am wary of these 'hybrid' suv/saloons. ford kuga, touareg etc.
for me they seem a bit gimmicky, filling the gap for those that can't quite afford a range rover for the school run, they almost look like they'd be good off roaders, but are they really sturdy or is it just a rugged looking shell on a regular saloon car.

Not that I would be any wiser if it were, i may be wrong entirely. Ill be addeding them to a search tho for future reference.
