Question on golf dead heat.

    Hi all,

I just want to get some opinions on this. Friend of mine had Sergio for first round leader in the masters done e/w.

The stake was 5 e/w. He was tied for first with one other so that would reduce the stake to 2.5*odds for the win part which is fine. Now for the place part both he and I calculated it at 5*(odds/4) as the e/w part of the bet should in our opinion be unaffected by the dead heat. Paddy powers bet calculator appears to agree with us but his bookie (one of the smaller local set ups with a few shops) is refusing to pay out the full place part and is reducing the e/w stake by half also. i.e. 5 e/w is now 2.5 e/w.

We are convinced the bookie is wrong, are we right in thinking this??

You are correct - the e/w part should be paid out in full.

There is no talking to them though, I went into a ladbrooks office there and asked the same question and they also calculated it wrong.

They are reducing the full stake by half rather than just the win part and there is no talking to them despite the online calculators saying different.

The place part is not a dead heat and should be at full odds. The fact they do not know this means I would check every bet I had with them and would use them only when I had too. Also I would make sure everyone who used the shop was aware they did not know what they were doing and should also check and query their bets.

Is this shop on Woodquay in Galway ?

Its actually not the local shop I originally thought, they have a few shops around the country and this one is in Briarhill in Galway.

He dropped into another place yesterday and asked the same question and they also were reducing the place stake along with my post above where I dropped into ladbrooks and the lad there was also reducing the place stake. It appears a lot of places don't know how to calculate the bets. I knew straight away how it should be calculated reason I posted is we started second guessing ourselves with so many places saying otherwise.

There is no taking to them either as I said they even rang up (the head office I assume) when he was in there and they were also calculating it with a reduced place stake. Its obviously something people need to be aware of.

It's like the banks: They might make a mistake but it will always be at your expense!!

That's idiotic on there part. An each way bet is effectively 2 bets. Your bet to win was a dead heat, and your bet to be in the top 5 is a winner. If he came 2nd on his own rather than a tie for first they would pay out the full e/w part of the bet.

If it's a decent sum of money and they have a facebook page I'd suggest getting on to them through that. If some people see it through facebook it would be very bad publicity for the bookie. I know how frustrating it can be dealing with a person who won't accept logic

It wasn't my own bet so its up to my friend how he goes about pursuing it (facebook etc). Its not worth a massive amount but even if was only a 5er it wouldn't matter its the principal of the thing. These are simple calculations, I'd hate to see some of these people dealing with multiples.

Bookies are fast enough to remind you that win and e/w are separate bets when they have money back on win only parts of bets etc. Its so stupid that they cant see through it though. Like if the bet was place only then they would pay out in full on the place.
