Giving a bit more information about the car would help e.g. year, engine type (diesel/petrol) and size etc.

It sounds like an ignition issue for which, assuming its a petrol engine, failing coil packs would be a likely culprit.

The engine management light is a generic light so nobody on the internet can possibly tell what is causing the light to come on. You will need to get the car hooked up to a diagnostic computer in a garage and the fault codes read from the car's computer to indicate where the problem may be. I'd advise getting it looked at sooner rather than later. What initially could be a small problem can snowball into a larger issue and repair bill if not looked at in time.

would the fact that its loosing power indicate anything?

Most likely a coil pack on an 04 Megane.

Coil packs are a very common problem on that model Megane but it's only a guess. The car is down on power because the car's computer has put it into limp home or safe mode where it will not let it rev above 2000 rpm, to protect the engine from damage.

A friend of mine had to replace 3 different coils in 3 months when his Laguna hit 7 years old
