Alternative (cheaper routes) ways of visiting NYC?

Was looking up flights for 2 to NY in early July (peak season I know) and they're coming in no cheaper than 600-750 euro.

Was just wondering if anyone could recommend any alternative routes such as maybe to Boston and get a train or Chicago etc or some other city within a couple of hours I could research flight to.

Perhaps there's a few posters here who have done something similiar which worked out a bit cheaper.

    Thanks

Try doing a search with your journey starting in a UK or European city. Then see if you can find a cheapo flight to that city from here. Just remember that if you select Ryanair, they do not do any forwarding of baggage, so you'll have to leave enough time to claim your bags and check in again for your flight to the US. You'll also have to pay to check bags, as I presume if you are going to the States, you won't be able to get by with just a carry on. However, that can all get a bit messy. As 600 euros to NY in July isn't bad, am not sure how much more you can save, that will make all that messing worth while.

Philadelphia or Washington DC might be cheaper flight options. Train from PHI to Philadelphia then on to NYC from one of the DC airports you could head into DC and get a cheap megabus to NYC.

If you use www.skyscanner.ie a "flexible"? option should pop up giving you PHI or DC flight/time options.

    What dates you going?

Around July 3rd mate, a few days either side of that date.

I know it's high season and I'm probably leaving it late too but going to try and research it anyway to see if it's feasible financially.

Independence Day? Yikes OP, you could not have picked a more expensive time to travel. The 4th of July Holiday weekend is hands down the busiest summer travel period in the US. Do you really have to travel during that precise week? You'll get absolutely hosed on hotels prices too if you do. You could potentially save yourself a lot of money by going a week earlier or later.

Yeah I was thinking same, a week later would also suit.

Good call. Even if you got a good deal on flying into Boston or Philly, the traffic on the freeways is famously horrific over the 4th of July period, as most Americans take to the road in some shape or form. The crowds and queues in bus and train stations would be horrendous too, that's presuming that you'd even be able to buy a ticket. When I lived in the US, I never went anywhere during the 4th of July weekend. It was just too much hassle.
