im sure there is a thread about this but cant find any. just wondering if energy drinks are any good-are they better to be taking during a run rather than water?

I never take anything but water in training, and that includes runs of 20 miles or more (in fact, I very rarely even take water, only if it's really hot and the run is really long).

The only time I'd recommend using energy drinks is if want to run a marathon and want to test if your stomach can take the energy drink on offer.

Sports drinks are vastly overused by people in my view,

You see people using them after 5k;s, 10k's and half marathon's all of which are pretty unneeded, the fact some people buy low calorie or no calorie sports drinks is just hilarious when you see them taking them on during events.

BBC did a doc on this last year, very interesting stuff

Coconut water is the best sports drink there is. Dunnes sell it, 1 litre for 2.70, which is pretty good value.

A great podcast (see end of the short article):

    http://trailrunnernation.com/2013/03...e-waterlogged/

Drink to thirst, water is excellent (also, train your body to eat the smallest possible amount of food during long runs / long distance races).

This is an excellent book to read: http://www.amazon.com/Waterlogged-Se.../dp/145042497X

I make my own using fruit juice, water, ginseng energy boost capsules and some table salt. Think most energy drinks have placebo effect and water is all you really need up to a certain distance, over 1hr 30 is only time I make my home made energy drinks and they work v well.
