This laptop has a core i5 and 4GB RAM and 500 GB HD

This one has 8GB Ram and 1TB HD

I am sort of on the look out for a laptop but not in great hurry. Any opinions on these ? The second one has more RAM but a pentium chip

I don't know anything about the actual laptops but one thing I will say about Argos is they have really great returns policy if you have trouble with the laptop, unlike some other large stores who sell PCs but will remain unmentioned, personal experience.

Why do you start a new thread on each laptop you see out there? :D

And with Argos it's usually hard to judge as they convently forget to post the processor model, a Core i5 could well be of the first generation, catching dust in a warehouse for the last 2 years. Thus a Core i5 laptop could be a worse deal than a Pentium laptop, a Core i5 430M is slower than a Pentium B980 for example.

very interesting you seem to know your chips. That is the sort of info i am looking for. Where would i get a list of processor models in order of 'newness' including the 430M part? Thanks

edit Core i5 3210M dual core

Currys carrickmines had the Acer i5 3210m with same specs and Windows 8 for €460 yesterday. It's an ex-display model I think.

If you google, say, 'Core i5 430M passmark price performance' (or any other processor), you'll end up at CPUMark.net:

This chart will tell you all you need to know, technical details, performance, power consumption and indeed the launch date.

Thanks did you ever get a reduction by quoting some of this? I told a guy last week a laptop was notv worth his asking but he would not give much off. I recon they wait till they find people who don not know and believe their spiel.. Going by here a lot of stuff in DID is overpriced

    Indeed.

I just had someone here with a "new" laptop, bought in an electrical appliances store for 600 yoyos... a first generation Core i3 Toshiba, 4 GB RAM, 320 GB HDD, integrated graphics. Shop owner must have been laughing all the way to the bank.

guess , like used car dealers, that is how they make profit. If everyone knew the proper price they would not make any
