A portrait of the musician, once described by his fellow member in the Dubliners, Barney McKenna, as the `mortar between the bricks' of the folk band, who announced their retirement in 2012. The programme illuminates key moments in the fiddle player's life - including when he quit a job to go full-time with the group in 1964, much to the dismay of his father - and features rare archive clips of the band. There is also footage of performances with Damien Dempsey, Declan O'Rourke, Charlie McGettigan, Maire Breatnach and Sean Keane

I think this will be worth a look. He always came across as the quiet man of The Dubliners, but he can tell a good story when interviewed. Nice to see him getting a programme to himself. Lovely fiddle player, I hope they give the Marino Waltz an airing

This should be a good show, John never got much limelight so it will be lovely to hear him tell a few tales of his own.

The "Marino Waltz" always reminds me of hauling in coal/turf from the bunker and getting filthy in the process...

The Mano Casino does it for me every time so looking forward to the show.

I think John would be a good interviewee on 'For One Night Only' with Gay Byrne.

He has stories to tell, and tunes to play.

Although perhaps they are covering the same ground in this programme.

Sounds an awful lot like Homeward Bound by Simon & Garfunkel.

It would be nice to see some of those archive Dubiners performances in full, maybe RTE could do a compilation show.

Enjoyable show, although I would have liked some more Marino Waltz!

Very good show. It was nice that it was all in John's own words and not some voice artist doing a voiceover

brill doc really enjoyed it met him in whites hotel wexford many many years ago and will never forget you were a hell of a nice guy when i first met you all those years ago and still havent changed a bit

1 small thing though did anybody else think it was a bit too similar to the wolfetones documentary that came out last year eg. starting in the airport, walking through the streets, etc just a few bits and pieces really but still enough to remark on

all round 10/10 doc though loved the old clips

There's some footage on the doc of a fairly young looking Ronnie Drew singing Nelson's Farewell (toora loora loora loora loo) in some pub. Pretty up close and personal and sounds like a good performance of the song. Anyone know if it's part of a longer film or what?

Edit : I think I've found it by YouTubing 'Dubliners O Donoghues" and found a film Brummy Dubliner uploaded called "O Donoghue's Opera". Great stuff. That Brummy Dubliner's some lad.

    He is, aye ;)

I'm gutted this documentary isn't on RTE's international player, was hoping to see it. Hopefully it will end up on youtube at some point.

Would love Sheridan or Jordan or anyone to film a biopic of Kelly and The Dubliners
