Just bought a 2yr old car in the North at the weekend. Is my first port of call to make an appointment with NCT centre to have the car checked out? I have the UK Vehicle registration document and Invoice for sale, is it okay to drive the car about until such a time as the car is inspected? Car is on a temporary additional vehicle insurance with my current insurer and has got Uk motor tax until July. Thank you

Within 7 days of your vehicle arriving in Ireland, you must book an appointment with the NCTS for it to be inspected. At the inspection the vehicle will be examined to ensure its characteristics match those recorded in the registration documentation. You pay the VRT charged after your vehicle has been inspected at the NCTS centre. The registration process must be completed within 30 days of the vehicle's arrival in Ireland.

Thanks Colm, Can you help with the second part of my question? Is it ok to drive around until vehicle is inspected etc?

Yes, book the appointment and work away.

Sorry, I asked this in another thread but maybe some might have seen it as an observation rather than a question. All replies greatfully recieved.

What's to gain by not registering the import within 30 days? Did i not read somewhere that you have to produce the original bill of sale for the import when presenting for VRT inspection at NCT centre?
So how does it benefit anyone to be driving the car around for 6/9 months and putting an extra 20k on the clock? Ok the car is a year older or whatever and has an extra 20k on the clock, which in theory would make the import cheaper if it wasn't for the fact that the date of purchase has to be proven.
    Am i missing something?

People delay because they either dont have the money yet for the VRT or they delay as long as they can so that the mileage and age increases which can mean a lower VRT payment.

The proof of purchase required by the NCT centre can often just be a handwritten piece if paper that cant be verified, especially if it was a private sale. So a person could write a receipt themselves and change the sale date to whatever suits them. Now you are supposed to also provide a ferry receipt to back this up but I dont think this is stricly enforced in a lot of NCT centres.

Also, you bring it to the NCTS center only to VRT it, you then have to make another appointment to bring it in for an NCT.

Ok so have the vrt inspection booked and all necessary documents ready for inspection.
Is there a gap in time between the NCT inspector confirming the vehicle is as seems and the Revenue telling what VRT is owing? ie if my inspection is on Saturday, I wont know until next week what i owe Revenue in VRT? (I have got an estimate on Revenue VRT calculator)
