Gear tuning on SRAM geared mountain bike

Doing light indoor training on a trainer at the moment. I have an old cheap mountain bike attached to my turbo trainer. I don't have a trainer wheel for my racer so reluctant to put it on with its new tyres I put on it.

The mountain bike I have is grand but slight problem. The gears aren't tuned or indexed correctly. There is a SRAM system on this bike with 5 speed cassette. When I select gear 4, nothing happened and when I changed down to gear 1, the chain stayed on the second cog of the cassette nearest the low gear cog.

I did a few adjusts with the limiter screws and barrel adjuster and even though, I corrected it, there is still a problem. Sometimes when I select gear 4 changing down from 5, it sometimes doesn't change or there are a good few revolutions before it changes or the chain rattled when gear 4 is selected.

Is there anything else I need to do? I was at it for over an hour but don't think I completely fixed problem.

I would have taken photos but forgot at the time.

    Thanks
