    Hello,
Apologies in advance if this is a repetitive query but I have trawled through the previous posts and not found what I'm looking for. I can't find anything on here about this course even though the prospectus says its IACP and IAHIP accredited. Has anyone done it or can anyone give me any opinions on it? Am filling in my application but don't want to pay the application fee, or worse, a course fee only to find out I've made a mistake!

The other two courses I've been looking at are the diploma bsc in pci and the DBS Ba, in that order, so if I could get any comparisons that would be great.

    Thanks

I'm not being funny but just ask them re: IACP etc. Have you a got to that course?

It's on dctc.ie. I just can't understand why it seems to be the one with the best accreditations yet no one here seems to have ever done it or even mentions it. It's weird!

The course you mention seems sound, I have herd of it a number of times, as far as I know it is IACP accredited, which is one body among many that recognize and set standards in C & P. Check it out yourself just to be sure. I would say this though, it is a four year diploma, you could complete an hons degree level 8 also accredited by IACP, in the time it will take you to do the diploma. If you are going to invest that much time and money into a course go for the degree, it will cover you when or if statutory regulation comes in.

I had a long post typed out then lost it:mad: I didn't realise it was Gardiner St; you don't hear as much about it as you used to but it is well recognised. It is not one I would generally recommend; but there are no problems or issues with it that I know of.

From looking at that site, it seems to me that you can apply for IACP membership and you may get it; but the course is not on the IACP list. Does that make sense?

As I said it is not my cup of tea, but from what I know it is a solid programme. I would wonder about spending four years for a Dip, you could get a degree over the same time frame.

Thanks for your replies! I did have the same thoughts about a dip v degree in the same time. It seemed to be a no-brainer-if you're going to spend roughly the same time/money, why wouldn't you go for the higher qualification?! The thing is I already have a BA so I'm not too worried about that aspect of it. Basically all I''m looking for is the course that will leave me best qualified to get a job /have my own practice when I'm done. Both from the point of view of others in the field and in the experience I will have gained for myself. I would want to feel confident having done whatever course I chose. I have looked at the PCI BSc in Counselling and Psychotherapy. It looks good, lots of personal development etc and I'd get a degree but I see others giving out about PCI in other threads. A degree is a degree though, no? The other then is DBS - I'm thinking the conversion course followed by Masters? Again, Masters is an even higher qualification but there doesn't seem to be much in the way of personal development etc in that option though?

Oddysseus, Can I ask why it's not your cup of tea? (Without expecting you to get libelous! :p)

Don't get me wrong I haven't heard anything negative about the course; though like any programme I am sure various issues arise within it.

I hace studied/trained in a few modalities; but I am for the most part interested in psychoanalytic psychotherapy, mainly Freud, Lacan etc.

From what I know of the content of that course it just would not interest; it is not a way that I would see myself working.

That said I have met plenty of good therapists who have trained there.

That's all I mean when I say it's not my cup of tea.

    Hey Oddshoes

I've just completed the Hdip in counselling & psychotherapy in DBS, well submitting my thesis tomorrow!!! I have to say the course is very comprehensive and involves a lot of experiential learning which for me was the main attraction of the course I don't believe that they advertise this enough.

I have an undergrad in Business and had no prior knowledge for the field of psychotherapy before starting the Hdip.

I would highly recommend the course, I'm now hoping to apply for the MA in psychotherapy.

    All the best

Thanks for your replies! Have decided I'm going to postpone making any decision for a while until I can save enough to do one of them. Going to use that time to do some reading / research into the different approaches and see which interests me most.
