English Silver hallmarks - maker's symbols instead of initials?

I know in England before the end of the 17th century a lot of makers used symbols instead of their initials due to general illiteracy in the population.

Does anyone know of any publication out there (or website - although I can't find one) where it gives a list of maker's symbols?

    Thanks

Here's a handy little book that is pocket sized and features gold, silver,
    pottery and porcelain marks:

I have a copy of the book here with me, what are the marks? I'll look them up.

The 'Jackson's ' book of marks is the one to get.

The older ones are very comprehensive and thicker than a 1980 golden pages.

Throw the mark up as an image and lets see if we can recognise it for you

That must be a rare piece of silver if it really is of that date.

I'm just curious Barney ...... sorry if I came across the wrong way ;)

No, you didn't come across the wrong way, I was just watching Zoolander
the other day and our "competing" offers reminded me of that funny bit in the film.

That sounds like a very comprehensive volume you mentioned, must check it out.

No sign of the any word from the original poster

Perhaps another member of our forum might post up a substitute mark for
us or any other would-be antiques hounds to "battle" over, just for fun. :)
