    I took a picture of this on holiday recently - anybody want to have a guess what they are based on the photo?

    To do with cart traffic. Width of stone matched the axle width and kept the carts in their own lane. At least, that's what similar stones did in Pompeii.

    Very good!! This is in Merida in Spain and was described as Roman Speed Bumps to slow down traffic.

    Plus they served as stepping stones for crossing roads that in towns were pretty filthy.

    Pompeii is fantastic, you can see grooves in the stones which were worn away by the wheels of the carts.
