Hi there, I'm 15-girl and am desperate in finding a part-time job after school or during summer holidays. I don't have any local small supermarkets, car garages etc. I could ask for a job. Any advice, I'd love any help. I can work anywhere possible.

There will be a slew of people on now telling you that it will be impossible to find a job because if the normal working man can't get a job, why should you. Ignore them and post up here when you get your summer job. Where do you live?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 255 ✭✭RingTheAlarm!

Completely agree, it's difficult (but not impossible!) and I admire your initiative.

Make a CV, and as you said you'd literally work anywhere, so go everywhere!

Tell them your availability for the summer, when you can start, etc. Ask to speak to the manager that'll be your best bet. A lot of them will say no but to leave your CV in case something comes up, and you'd be surprised when some things do come up.

Local markets (not supermarkets) are generally good for hiring young people as well. From what I can remember you can work 40hrs during the summer holidays.

I started on 1 day per week, then I got given more hours as time went on. Best of luck!

You can work at 15. But there are strict conditions to the type of work and work hours.

Hey, are you short of cash or just wanting to keep yourself occupied? Whilst i admire your enthusiasm, you should consider one important factor:

Your 15, your free, you got no bills, trust me, the adult world sucks balls, working for a good 40 + years, bills, paying high tax rates and hidden taxes which out government mask as a necessity to help the country get out of debt!! Please don't contribute to there communist regimes, enjoy your summer and have fun, one day you will miss it!!

That is the most ridiculous bit of advice you are ever likely to hear.

Surely someone willing to work at 15 should be commended. I worked every summer since I was 13 and it was always great to have money and not scabbing off my parents.

There it is - the negativity has started. Don't take any notice. Be tenacious, pursue every avenue to find what you are looking for. Nothing is impossible.

Young people need to be encouraged, not told that they won't succeed. My 17 year old daughter got a part time job even though there was stiff competition. Granted it won't be easy at 15 to get a summer job, but if you tell someone that there chances are remote, and they hear that often enough, they will end up believing it.

Whilst nepotism is rife in Ireland, I moved here in 2008 and I did not know anybody. I have had 4 jobs, all of which I got without help from anyone, and I don't have a degree either, which is a big hindrance in Ireland.

Tell me about it. I have a wealth of experience but I have really come up against problems in Ireland. I spoke with an agency a little while ago who was enthusing down the phone about a particular job, and saying how my skills and experience were a perfect match. When I told her I did not have a degree, there was a 10 second tumbleweed moment, whereby she was obviously trying to formulate her get out...hilarious.

Your not going to get it via websites. Its unfortunately going to take going around different places, with your CV in hand, so they can see that you are presentable, hard working and motivated. You say you are in Swords? I used to live there, there should be loads of opportunities. First thing I would do is print out about 20 copies of your CV, and go around the Pavillions. I would ignore the major retail chains, but things like the Juice bar might give you a trial. Maybe offer to work for a day for free so they can see how you work? Maybe go into the Barbers / hair salons and ask them if they would like someone to keep the floor free of hair?

Also, another idea can be that an odd day or two's work can be picked up for places as well cleaning up yards, people's houses, etc. Put a few ads up in shopping centres for babysitting, cleaning, etc as well.

As for those who are saying not to work, etc, I say if you want to do it go for it! It's a great feeling earning your own money and while it can be hard at time a lot of it can be character building. I've been working since a young age and if anything it has motivated me even more to achieve things :)

Also, another thing which you could do OP is do a few bits and pieces to build up your CV, like starting a blog, etc! I would recommend though (and this is one thing that I do regret but as of late have got back into properly) is sticking with hobbies/interests, otherwise you'll just be living to work and that novelty wears off after a while!

Giving a hand for morning deliveries, etc can be another useful one. You'll need to do a manual handling course though!

Obviously you need to change your technique. Is it the same CV you sent out 800 times?

Every time you send out a CV you need to tailor it to the job you are going for and each and every time you need to send a covering letter which specifically answers the essential criteria for the role, giving an example of how you meet the requirements. Employers who receive hundreds of CV's are not going to look at yours if you do not send a covering letter....and sometimes you can try and attract an employers attention by the way you answer the questions on the website...for instance on Jobs.ie employers can ask questions which you need to answer before you apply. I applied for a job and one of the questions was "Why do you think this role is for you"? and I replied 'You won't find anyone who can do this better'! I included the exclamation mark otherwise I might have looked a bit up my own backside, but it got me an interview!

Spelling and grammar is also very important - do not rely on spell check!

What ever ones that you can get to! Take a CV and a covering letter - don't just hand it in to the till staff - ask for the manager - and explain you are looking for work.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 451 ✭✭Calgary22

Great information jester144 never would have tried any of that:p haha

I just know that the till staff throw away the CV's in a lot of cases, so I thought I would try and prevent that from happening by mentioning going to the manager. I think it's better to approach the boss if possible, but not everyone does that, with a binned CV being the result. :(

@teotd I pride myself in being able to 'get down with the kids'. When I am not lmao, I am often found rofl, or even pmsl, it just depends how amusing the actual situation is.

    WDYWFM?

    Laters.

I know I am not cool. Those days are gone. In fact I am not sure if I ever was! (Sigh). One of the things I always did in front of my kids was to teach them to spell. I hope your CV is not awash with basic spelling errors such as in the above.

I would imagine most potential employers would be rofloling.

well i suppose my single parent was always too busy making sure we were fed and dressed to worry about spelling i suppose it was my job to make sure of that and at the time back then i taught i was the big fella with my trade and leaving school earlier 16 and dumb. but seeing the world now from someone in there mid 20's i wish i could better myself spelling wise but i don't no how to.

I hope my cv is not full of errors. in the days of when i went for jobs 05 cvs were the least of employers worry's if ya could work you were hired.

OP : try working on a farm, if you live close to one. My 2 cents

Quite late but thanks guys. I finally got a job at my local SuperValu since June and I'm delighted :D Getting my first pay was the best feeling ever. Whoever is looking for a job and is still under 18, put CV's in to local shops, restaurants, etc. Who knows maybe someone will contact you (just make sure you have your phone turned on as I nearly missed my call for an interview :D ). Good Luck!!!
