2002 Bora Handbrake Imbalance

    Hi all,

A family member had a NCT fail yesterday on a VW Bora. It was a 65% handbrake imbalance.

Does anyone know if these can be adjusted at the callipers (disks all round)?

If not, is it time to replace the cables?

I hope it isn't too much of a job, I don't really fancy fighting with cables under the car without a lift!

It could be anything from a sticking caliper, stuck brake pad, seized slider, cable, or adjustment. The cables are adjusted from inside the car at the handbrake lever. If it does turn out to be a cable problem then replace both left and right together.

    Thanks for that George.

The car passed on regular brakes so I am going to rule out stuck pad or caliper.

The adjuster nut is well tightened under the center console, and there in an imbalance in the cable...one side seems to be pulling more than the other on the pivot joint.

The cables are only 17 euro each so I might as well replace them and see what happens.

Remember that the handbrake mechanism on the caliper can also seize and that will not affect the service brake operation. So check that out as well.
