I would like to build a TV server hopefully with TBS 6985 Quad DVB-S2 and another DVB-T2 card. Any reccomendations on PSU, Board, Case, Processor, Ideally as low powered as possible. Can be noisy and nasty looking as will be in the attic feeding other HTPC's over ethernet. Have HDD's and OS and parts listed below.

    Advice please :-)

    1. What is your budget? €400 or as cheap as you can go

    2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? Media Portal TV Backend Server

    3. Do you need a copy of Windows? No

    4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? GT210 Nvidia Card, HVR-4000

    5. Do you need a monitor? No

5a. If yes, what size do you need.

5b. If no, what resolution is your current monitor and do you plan to upgrade in the near future?

    6. Do you need any of these peripherals? No

    7. Are you willing to try overclocking? Yes

    8. How can you pay? Credit Card

    9. When are you purchasing? Whenever

    10. If you need help building it, where are you based?

Why DVB-T2 , can you receive FreeviewHD. Soarview only requires DVB-T. How many HTPC's you planning to feed ?

Well before you go and buy the TBS 6985 research the "slow channel change issues" and see if they have been resolved. I know DVBviewer has an adapted dll file which cuts channel changing times from up to 30-60 down to second to 3-4 seconds. Even at 3 seconds I would'nt be happy, I'm not sure if the issue which also existed in Mediaportal and MS MCE too has been solved by driver releases. Ask on the MP forum.

I also would not place any PC in the attic, humidity can be higher and cause big problems. I have my MP TV server in the airing closet with all cables feed through the ceiling space. It is hidden, can't be heard and runs cool. It's just a cheap atx case with plastic front bezel removed and no cover/door on the sides.

For your reference my setup which has been in constant upgrading/tweaking state currently is a DFI G7B630-NR an Intel E4400, 4GB DDR2 PC26400, two WD 2TB green drives, two WD 2TB black, One 500 gig os drive(Samsung i think), 4 TERRATEC Cinergy DVB-S2 tuners, one pinnacle 7010ix dual dvb-s dual dvb-t tuner and finally one Mystique SaTiX-S2 Dual DVB-S2. This is not a build made with efficiency in mind but it still all runs on less than 130watts with antec basic psu.

I had seen some issues with that alright and I will look into it more, from what I read its more of an issue with Media Portal an not the pcie card. Im not 100% that it will be media portal I go with but I think the 4 Sat inputs on the one card is an attractive trait to me.

Its a dormer so the attic space will be equipped with ventilation and will be customized to suit. (will end up like an airing cupboard anyways)

Thanks for the time to inform me of all this I will look into your setup to see if it suits my needs/budget.

Just looking at the specs on that board G7B630-NR chances are I wont be able to get one the same as I imagine you have it a while.

Questions for you though. How many PCI-e Cards can you add to the likes of that board? I see maybe only 1 PCI-e slot? (not sure thats why I ask)

I only have that board about 6 months; picked it up on ebay new for 30 euro (it's got two PCIe x1 express, one PCIe x16, 4 PCI). The only reason I got it rather than a new tech was I already had my Cinergy DVB-S2 cards (which are PCI interface) a spare cpu and spare ram to hand. If I was starting from scratch I think I'd look at a low powered solution possibly a MATX board with an AMD E350 or E450 with 3 or more pci-e connections for the newer dual and quad DVB-S2 cards(the are pci-e x1 interface but work in x16 slots fine) .....a board like the MSI E350DM. There may be similar Intel solutions available too.
