We do about 15000 miles per annum. A good mix of long and short trips. We are not looking for excitement, just value and reliability in about an 06-07 car. Are the 1.6HDI in these reliable or are there known issues with them that will keep costing money?

Thanks in advance for any input.

Cheers Colm mcm. Looks like a no no so as finding one that you trust to be well looked after would be difficult.

The 2.0 HDi doesn't have the same issues as above, although as with most other modern diesels can have trouble with DPFs (though I can't imagine you would with that kind of mileage) and premature DMF failure. Since you're looking at pre-'08 the €710 tax might scare you off, but you should be able to get one for less than a 1.6 because of this (a brief look at Carzone suggests they're cheaper for the same age), also fuel economy and servicing is reasonable.

In terms of getting you from A to B reliability is ok, they don't tend to actually let you down on the road any more often than other cars.

However they do give lots of niggly problems which don't bother some people too much but will drive others mad. If you are the type of person who doesn't want to be making regular trips to a garage or who can't put up with warning lights popping up on the dash for no apparent reason then the 407 isn't for you.

Having said all that I think they are an under-rated car. They are cheap to buy, nice to drive, lots of them are well specced and if you find a well looked after one and keep on top of maintenance you will probably be happy enough with one once your expectations aren't unrealistic.
