Don't have the right software for an online course

    Hi All,

Any help on this would be much appreciated.

I just bought a new laptop, Toshiba satellite L850D-12Q, windows 8.

I also just signed up to an online language course, the web site I bought this from allows you to "try before you buy" which I did and I had no issues accessing the material. However when I now try to access my course It won't allow me as it say's I do not have the required software or my system is not compatible with it.

I have tried viewing the material on the desktop but it still won't allow me. I have adobe flash payer as it comes integrated with windows 8 and the only message I'm getting when I try to play the material is "ensure you have flash payer activated".
If you haven't guessed by now I'm not great with I.T, I;m not even sure if the info I've giving is useful but I'm really stuck and would be grateful if someone could give me some advice.

You can't, in Windows 8, IE 10 will update it automatically (if you have automatic updates enabled).

If you're using IE, which one is it? The funny Modern UI app or the real one in Desktop mode?

double check what the requirements of the course are online

try a different browser, eg; can't remember if google chrome still has flash built in

firefox also does some things itself

if you have some security program like nortons installed it might be blocking some stuff on the site - unlikely but you never know

contact the course organisers as you can't be the only person using windows 8

try logging on from another computer
    - dont' forget to use private browsing ( Shift Ctrl P ) so it doesn't remember passwords and settings and stuff

if all else fails and the course is essential you can setup a virtual machine
it's over kill but it's your Plan C
messy but if you have something like linux mint/ubuntu with firefox & shared profile / google docs you can swap between your real machine and the virtual one running in a window when you get the problem solved

The Tile IE10 has flash installed but only runs flash from MSFT approved sites (...yeah)

The Desktop Mode is the full unadulterated thing, and requires flash installation.

You can also simply have a blast of it with Firefox or something.

Thanks for all your replies and advise although I don't understand a lot of it, i.t was never a strong point of mine.I've tried using firefox but it keeps telling me to download flash player but for some reason it won't let me. I've followed all the directions and at this stage I just feel dumb.
The language course site says I need the following in order to view the course content:

ComputerPentium-class PC or equivalent Operating SystemWindows XP, Vista or Windows 7 Internet Browser
    • MS Internet Explorer 7.0, 8.0, 9.0
    • Firefox 3.6 or above (not supported on all courses).
Graphics Card1024x768 resolution with 64mb of RAM Colours16-bit (65536) colours RAMAt least 512MB (1GB recommended) Processor Speed2.5GHz Soundcard16 bit Sound with Speakers / Headphones Connection Speed256kbps of Internet Bandwidth per concurrent user.

Here is a link for Adobe Flash player which is suitable for Firefox.

    Download this

    http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/completion/?installer=Flash_Player_11_for_Other_Browsers

Save it to your desktop or somewhere handy and double click to run it. Make sure Firefox is closed when installing.

When it is finished installing try your course page with Firefox and let us know if it works for you.
