WIT to be a campus of UCC.

    What would be the advantages?

Please note the thread topic, if you want to list the disadvantages please open a new thread!

first off, the headline is a definite statement like WIT is going to be part of UCC.
The disdvantage to that would be the gradual erosion of WIT to the benefit of UCC so it would be a disaster. Thats all you really need to comprehend id say

    Moving to the WIT Forum.

Not sure why this is being discussed, but WIT isn't being connected with UCC afaik.

WIT has been looking for University status for some time now, Dept of Education is more interested in rationalisation than expansion.

I suppose WIT may gain access to more online journals or books. What is the advantage for UCC though?

A merger with an IT is far more likely (Carlow in particular) and would probably be more advantageous to WIT as it would be the major partner.

On the other hand WIT would have University status and better oversight.

What would UCC gain from a merger, though?

I see a merger with IT Carlow with a view to "Technical University" status in the future for the combined institute as more likely. Both colleges already operate over multiple campuses (included a shared centre in Kilkenny (although I believe this is non teaching)) and are original (ie 1970) institutes so they have certain, existing, similarities.

Tbh, I feel any merger/upgrade will be more due to political rather than educational reasons.

I note your comments, but I do not share your view on political rational, firstly UCC is doing fine and Cork has no great political influence at present. Furthermore I respect the integrity of Ruairi Quinn who is far removed from both constituencies. If Martin Cullen was still in cabinet we would have more reasons to be worried.

As a matter of interest Kilkenny is part of Maynooth Campus.

NUI-Maynooth has a presence in Kilkenny yes. I was referring to the new "Kilkenny Research and Innovation Centre". It's a joint project between WIT and ITC.

AFAIK Phil Hogan is in favour of a University of the South East. I'm sure the people of Carlow-Kilkenny would be happy to see a university located in their county. Particularly if a new campus is established in Kilkenny City.

Why do you think UCC would be willing to take on WIT? I can't see any advantages and I think it would probably be detrimental to Waterford.

Merging WIT with UCC would end up being a disaster for WIT. It would lead to a gradual sapping at the resources in place at WIT. What happens to the courses that are similar between the two colleges? UCC will cherry pick the best of WIT lecturers and have them work on the courses in UCC leaving the standards of WIT to drop. WIT would just become a shell of what it is now imo. Waterford as a city has suffered enough without it getting another kick in the teeth from this government.
