Bird Injured on my balcony

Not sure what forum this belongs to but please move it if After Hours isn't right.

A bird (seagull) just crash landed on my balcony. He seems to be in a bad old way. Has a limp and neck looks a bit shook as well as piece of string tied to his leg. He wont let me near him, tried to get up a limp away from me frightened. Is there any animal groups or anything I can call to help him?

I am in Dublin City Centre.

I'd see eating animals and being OK with seeing them suffer as being completely independent.

So as long as you don't have to watch them suffer?

I found a blackbird last week injured. I put it in a shoebox (as per advice from the t'internet, bird rescue place) and it had a little rest for an hour or so then was grand so released it back outside. The box stops it getting stressed apparently. Don't feed it just give it water.

They don't have to suffer for me to eat them.

Try the DSPCA, I'd leave him alone for now as well and let him rest. If he sees you he'd probably panic and might do himself more harm. See what DSPCA have to say.

In the event of an emergency please call the local Garda station... WTF can a Garda do? Surely that's wasting police time?

Dress up as one yourself and carry your new friend around town and flap to your heart content singing free as a bird.

    Be great craic.

Heat up the pan, season him with salt and pepper and then throw him in.

    Dinner sorted, seared seagull.

    No need to thank me.

It might be worth googling any wildlife rescues in Dublin area, they might be able to help. Guards mainly help with dogs, cats and horses etc I think. I think they often take any emergency cases to local rescues.

The DSPCA also recommends a vet outside of their operating hours?

It'll probably be alright. Will fly off when it comes around.

Oh I know a shoe box would be too small but the concept is still the same if you have something bigger. :)

Call your local Chinese takeaway, they'll pay good money for "chicken"!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,901 ✭✭✭Mince Pie

Surely seagull would be fatty and a bit more like duck so would fetch a better price than chicken??

Not if it has a poor diet.... you are what you eat and I'd imagine a bird that lives of human scraps to not taste so great.

For example I ate a guinea pig once and it was very fatty, not really to my taste. Good quality meat has more muscle, less fat.

Breadcrumb his ass and into the oven at 200 for 20 mins. Nom nom nom... Lucky you.

Put the poor bird out of its misery and pull its neck. Terrible to leave any animal suffering.

You said it had a string attached to it , are you sure its not a balloon ?

Just move out of your appartment for a few days, leave the lights off, leave fresh water and some food, pull the blinds and go back and check on him in a few days, i'm sure he'll be fine........:)

Yes, a guinea pig is an almost perfect example of a bird that eats human scraps.

I thought guinea pig tasted a bit like duck to be honest, only it tasted very greasy.

Would a guinea pig not taste like sausages?

I've eaten two guinea pigs. One was greasier than the other and neither tasted like sausages.

Yeah they really don't. I'm still hoping someone here has tried seagull. Curious now.
