    Hi guys,

I'm very interested in this car http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/4801781 and I'd like to get your opinion about it and similar Mercedes cars in general.

What's the average mpg for such car? Anyone has a similar one and can recommend it?

This car has also a low mileage for a 03 car, what do you guys think?

    Thanks!

Seeing as there are no biters on this thread, I'll give you my 2p worth!
Lets start with the "general" Mercedes stuff. From 2000 onwards, Merc suffered electrical issues, poor build quality and mechanicals were no where near as good as previous generations. General advice is never buy a merc with a 0 (zero) in the reg....
This specific model C180 suffered timing chain problems (noisy, slipping teeth, grinding gears away and eventually snapping)
All front pulleys, tensioner, alternator and power steering pump pulley go noisy and collapse for fun, even at low mileage.
ABS sensors and ABS control units go.
Vehicles fail emissions test on NCT due to burning valves and poor valve seating in cylinder heads. VERY EXPENSIVE REPAIR and unfortunately very common.

The car you are looking at:
Must you have manual? Merc manuals are clunky, awkward and horrible to drive while their auto's are perfection.
NCT 06/13 - hope it will pass!!

    To sum up:
There are thousands of these C180's trundling around and they are basically an ok car. It's no better and no worse than an Astra or a Focus. Don't let me put you off, and I'm not trying to put you off - I'm a merc fan and a merc driver. I have previous model C180 auto, last of the 202 model from 2000 and it's a great car. I commute up the N11 every day and it returns 35mpg if driven easy.

    Hope this helps,

    SUMO

I'd also be looking for more information than what the seller has listed (which is virtually nothing), a fairly complete service history and confirmation of that mileage.

If I had to buy a C Class it certainly wouldn't be a manual one.

My parents bought a manual 2007 C180K in 2008. They still have it and not once have they had any issue, electrical, mechanical or otherwise with it. It was always serviced on time and kept clean by me. Not one issue in their 5 years of ownership, not even a small thing.

Looks like a very good cheap car. People happily handed over 35 or 40 grand for that not too long ago.

I have a friend who bout one 4 years ago, a 2003 c180 kompressor , and has not had one single issue with the car. So while I do agree newer mercs seem to have there issues and it would seem that the E200's of this vintage seem to really be gamble ,it could be worth a punt but not at this price. I would not really pay any more that 1800 euro for the car.

For a base, manual C-Class, madness.

New shape ones are reliable alright. The new shape C-Class is actually a very good car. Previous one like the one in the OP were fine, not fantastic.
