I am using a dovado UMR with a huawei E1820 modem on three network, in my location it is the only way i can recieve a decent connection, during the day i am getting as low as 30kb/s (sometimes lower) but at night it can hit 700kb/s

sometimes when i restart my modem a couple of times during the day i can get a considerable speed increase , other times its just awful speeds.

I use this connection to play online on my ps3 and xbox but cant do so during the day without incredibly bad lag whereas at night it is perfectly fine. I'm in the sticks so i cant expect much but is there any way to increase the strength of the signal more and get better speeds? according to the comreg site im not that close to a mast and the only way i can get the 700kbs speed at night is by using a usb extension cable in the one spot of my house (ive tried everywhere).

Apparently there is a meteor mast very close to me but they dont have a good enough plan to suit my needs (only 20gigs a month which i would eat through in a week.)

was wondering if there was another modem i could get that is more powerful at picking up the signal?

It's not just signal strength, it's how busy your cell is and what backbone capacity from the cell to upstream is. Your provider might be cramming too many users into the cells that cover your area.
It's getting that way with 3 around here; rubbish during the evening, but great in the mornings/afternoons and overnight. Too many users.
I'm in a similar situation to you - rural cell, miles away from the mast, but using an external antenna, which helps a bit/lot depending on the weather.

    What kind?

Or does each network have its own?

I got mine from Germany, but there are plenty available now from other sources. Just google for 3G antenna. There's a S.African company who make good ones and sell direct.

You have to make sure of what type connector you have on your dongle and if necessary buy an adapter. Poynting will probably be able to tell you what you need.

I used a 9dBi flat plate on a 40ft mast on the side of my building, but in retrospect I might have been better using an open Yagi type for a bit extra gain.
