Hi guys I went to view a car today an 08 a4 and noticed what looked like welding and paint above the arch has this car had a major accident I have attached an image I took below

The guy also bought the car from the north and has the northern slip signed over to himself and assured me he can go with me to the vrt office and explain the car is mine when paying the vrt to put it in my name . He is either a trader not wanting to give a pps no or is this possibly sonething else .Big Alarm bells are ringing am I right ?

Meh, that welding wouldn't jump out at me as being something to be suspicious of.

You can see similar welds in this image: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_FoXyvaPSnVk/SlYO3_Erv_I/AAAAAAAB5zc/hqgBfbsMzTk/s1600/Audi-A4-TDIe-5.jpg

But buying it off, what sounds to be a trader, telling you porkies about how to VRT it would have me concerned.

The seams/welding is all factory, nothing to worry about there.

Looks like the wing may have been painted but hard to tell from the picture.

As for the VRT thing, black market trader it seems, I would imagine he wants to be paid in cash as well...

It's definitely had a shunt at the front but I can live with that once it's not major but on the other arch you could see fresh paint where some repair had been done possibly just light cosmetic damage .

The paperwork is really bothering me as I'm not 100 percent on how the uks paperwork works on transfer oif ownership so I could be relying on somebody's word to prove I own the car .

I'd have a problem lining those fellas pockets. There are plenty genuine garages bringing in uk cars that they stand over, pay tax etc.

Yep looking for cash vin numbers all matched so does seem legit but I'm very worried about the paperwork .

The protection around the arch is broken so it has had a bang on the left hand side but maybe I'm being over cautious

Why would you entertain a car like that if you are suspicious pre sale!! Plenty of cars for sale.

Just thinking back he had the nct printout so obviously did the initial visit but reckons the ownership can be changed on paying the vrt I wouldn't think this is the case ?

Move on, plenty more choice if you're stuck on buying an A4.

Tell him to VRT and NCT the car, then you can do business.

yea, if you suspicious even before you bought it, better move off, as bad feeling will follow you all time, a specially if you discover something else wrong later on.
If you cant find anything else than this car which falls in to all your requirements, get it inspected by engineer, might will cost you a bit, but goin to be well cheaper, than get that car sorted right.

and else.. you may check that car history in internet, wont cost you arm and leg. there is loads of them, just put in google " uk car history check", and youll find good bunch of those online car check sites.

If I do decide to bite ill have a mechanic check it and do a cartell check

Is what's he is saying about the paperwork possible I couldn't see the revenue allowing this

Here are the facts. Its illegal to sell an unregistered uk car in Ireland unless you have a TAN number (ie a legit garage)
If ye tell the VRO that its your car, then yere both lying.

Just remember you will need an invoice and proof of purchase to get it vrt'ed, plus it will need to be in date. Theres a time limit on it.

On another note, he could vrt the car in your name, but the NCT centre will need his id and pps aswell as yours because he is presenting the car. ( i doubt he will want to do this..)

In regard to vlc theres nothing to worry about, once you have it , the car is yours. But the usual checks apply: ( it could be stolen, cloner, write off, etc)

    Its your call:cool:

is it just the green clip of the V5 he has?

if so, you can't vrt a car with just the green slip.....

I thought that myself initially. There are too many alarms just needed clarification I wasn't being paranoid. Thanks for the replies

I'm looking at ni ones now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Mainland UK ones will be cheaper to buy, obviously will cost you money in travel, but when you're spending big enough money its worth looking,
The a4 is a very desirable car to Irish people so a lot of the ones in NI will end up here.

+1 on this, and don't forget, GB cars are less likely to have had washed diesel through them and all the expensive problems that it causes.

    Thats it.
I personaly wouldnt go near a NI car.
Washed diesel is huge issue overthere.
Besides, most of the cars for sale in NI are coming from Uk, so you're better of going across the pond yourself.

I got to post number 5, and TBH, if you have doubts now, how will you feel this time next year? Will you be happy? Plenty of A4's out there, you could probably bring one from the UK as cheap and have less worry. i.e. buy from an Audi UK dealer, full history no messing.
