Has anyone done the above cycle? It looks like a lovely route, just wondering how difficult it is?

Very good leisure cycle. Plenty of cyclists, walkers, families. Good hire facilities and plenty of one-way options if that suits you (or you want to go downwind only).

Several posts here discuss it and the types of bike to use... try a search.

Not difficult at all! Cycled it last August, beautiful leisurely cycle, not really suitable for a roadbike. We rented tour bikes from Clew Bay Bike Hire in Westport for the day, very reasonable rates etc. They also have drop-off points at three different locations and also provide a bus service for return to base, if required, all included in the rate.

Cycled it a couple of weeks ago and rented bikes from Clew Bay Bike Hire. They were brilliant. Really helpful and provided top quality equipment. They also brought us out to Westport so we could cycle back (better chance of the wind blowing you home if you are travelling east) The scenery is fantastic especially the trip from Achill to Mulranny and Mulranny to Newport. Newport to Westport is ordinary enough but overall it is a really nice cycle and not too difficult. There are loads of places to stop along the way. The day we did it was relatively fine (cold but dry) and there were loads of people on green way. It was amazing to see the amount of business this generated for bike hire, coffee shops etc. It really seems to be providing an economic boost. Some of the locals mentioned that there were plans to extend the cycle way to Castlebar. I guess it helps having a Taioseach and Minister for Tourism in the constituency. That being said, it is money well spent for what is a fabulous facility. It also appears that the local businesses we experienced along the route appreciate the opportunity and were all providing excellent products (cycle hire, food etc) and really friendly service.
