Jack Lynch Tunnel ANPR (TOLL ?)

I noticed recently that ANPR cameras have been installed at the Jack Lynch Tunnel in cork.
They are located to the left and right of the yellow height sign at the tunnel mouth.
Radar traffic counters have also been installed.

Up until the beginning of this year the tunnel was run by the city, now it is being run by the NRA.

Is a TOLL on the way ?
Personally i believe that once the N40 flyovers are complete and the Dunkettle interchange is completed, cork drivers may have to pay for the privilege of using the JLT.

the tunnel will be redundant if they toll it, more or less everyone can take an alternative route which would be not out of their way (just take longer). It was built to relieve the City Centre of traffic and tolling it would reverse that.

ANPR for traffic and safety monitoring eh? what do you need someones reg number for to do that? Safety monitoring could mean checking who is changing lanes in the tunnel or it could it could mean looking for speeders too. Ambiguous

As an aside, why do you need lights in a tunnel, when it is dark in so many places at night and no lights are needed? and why do you need a "no lane changing" rule and indeed an 80km?h speed limit...it's just another dual carriageway!

Alternate route: Alternate routes would become gridlocked, and people would then take the tunnel, as it would save them even more time than it does now.

Speeding: the anpr cams are only at the entrance. for speed they need them at 2 points (to average your speed)

Lights: Lights are there to allow your eyes adjust as you enter /exit

No changing lanes: its a measure to reduce accident as there is no hard shoulder.

80km: dont know, but i dont see an issue with it

The cams are to the right and left of the Yellow height sign

not seen above as the cams are only a recent addition, but you'll know where to look

you only need to know the speed at on point to know you are speeding

Welcome to our world. The Limerick tunnel has been tolled since day one. The geniuses in power even guaranteed the PPP company that runs it a minimum number of vehicles using it every year, if that figure is not reached then the tax payer has to pay the short fall. It gets used but not by the amount the officals had hoped for.

The difference between the Limerick tunnel and the JL tunnel though is that people knew the Limerick tunnel would be tolled and either chose to avoid it and put up with the inconvenience of going through the city as before or pay for the faster tunnel route. In Cork people have become so accustomed to using it for free that they might be less enclined to avoid it even with a toll.

ANPR works over 2 points, it averages your speed.

    radar/laser is instant

there are no places where street lights end then and it is dark?
there are no hard shoulders on many roads?

the REAL reason is all the numpties who would panic entering a dark hole in t'ground.imho

I'd imagine it's more to do with going from a dark tunnel to daylight/sun

Cross lanes, crash, fire + tunnel = very bad.

I'll be parking my car in the tunnel if they toll it, sideways, and when they tow it I'll go and collect it and park it there again.

No they are not going to toll it...

It's kite-flying. Getting angry about kite-flying is the correct response.

I'd like to know why they're spending money on ANPR cameras when the N25 is in such bad condition they have signs up telling people about it; signs that they probably rent, more money down the drain. Here's a tip lads: Spend the forking money on the /potholes/.

I /fell/ into three potholes in a row on a dark rainy night last week, no hope of spotting them at all, /another/ tyre gone because of them.

If I recall, there was some talk before of tolling the tunnel. They couldn't as it was built with EU grant funding and no private money was used in building it.

Wait for the spin, when we're told that the toll is to cover tunnel upkeep and for the fly overs and new interchange
